Basic questions

hello, I am brand new to the Oculus rift. I just order dk1(I'm 15 and cant afford the new model) and I was wondering if I can use the oculus rift as a hdmi monitor for an xbox 360 w/out using the gyroscope? thanks!

  • No sorry. I don't believe it can be used as a monitor. I could be wrong but I don't think so.
  • The Rift is currently a Development Kit intended for game developers. It only works on PC, Mac, and Linux (soon), and only with compatible content. It DOES NOT work AT ALL on Xbox/Playstation or Blu-Ray/DVD players. Even on the PC, you can't just play any game, only the selection of specially made apps.

chances are at some point someone supports HDMI capture cards that you can hook up your console/mediaplayer to and then you can play games in a virtual theater (maybe even with 3D support).
I always wanted to give it a try (since I already have the HDMI capture hardware), but so far have not taken the time to do so. I can see 3D from PS3/PS4 being a fun thing with the DK2.

Do yourself a favour dude. Cancel that order you made, do some research before you spend hundreds of dollars on a device that might not be right for you.

Understand that if you're not a developer, buying a development kit right now means joining a community of early-adopters and struggling alongside them to get things to work properly, as well as being a guinea pig for the developers as they release content. As such, you need to do your research before you decide you want to get into it. I'm not saying you shouldn't, but asking if you can use the DK1 as a monitor for your Xbox suggests to me that you haven't done the necessary research.

Also, don't buy a DK1. All the new demos don't support it, so you're basically stuck using the content that was available for it six months ago, with no prospects of its use expanding beyond those few demos. If you can't afford a DK2, save up for it (or better yet, save up for CV1 and buy Cardboard now to mess around with)
