Capabilities of DK2 External Camera

Is there anyone with some general expertise/knowledge on what the external camera coming with the DK2 will be capable of? More specifically, I'm curious whether or not it's powerful enough to be able to also detect, say, certain hand motions in front of it, which could initiate programmed responses, or if a separate sensor would be required for that.

Based on what I've seen the sensor cam do, I wonder if it could be programmed to initiate commands when certain sensor points inside the Rift that it's supposed to track get blocked (by, for example, a hand being put between camera and sensor point).

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • It's an IR camera, so probably won't work very well for general gesture recognition.

This actually brings up a question from me. How much access to the actual camera functionality do we get in the API? Does it just work automatically with the API to provide location data that we can use in our programs, or can we actually get more information from it?
  • Thank you for your reply.

Another question: could the IR camera DK2 ships with be strong enough to, say, replace an Xbox Kinect as a IR sensor? Any idea on the strength of the camera/range/depth/etc. compared to the Kinect? Could it, for example, register an Oculus user's position as he/she walks around in 3D space?
  • I'm quite interested in the capabilities of the IR camera as my home setup is a computer connected to my 55in Sammy. I always wondered how well the IR camera would work under low lighting and me sitting on my recliner chair 8ft away. I'm more then willing to relocate my whole setup to make this work; from what I've seen it looks like my setup should work just fine. The only question is the lighting, and I'm fine with figuring it out on my own. :D
