I like the elimination of over all occlusion issues because of body occlusion like a stationary kinect or leap has (assuming you want to be free to move 360 degrees). Digits is always in view of your hands. I can see this shrunken down into a wrist device that also serves as a watch and phone's secondary display.
It does have thumb occlusion issues though... how can that possibly be solved with this technique?
Also I couldn't do Iron Man hand with it as the fingers would be occluded from the wrist.
And you need one for each hand. Maybe two stationary IR cameras working together might be better though - like a kinect type device on opposite sides of a room/motion space.
I do like strapping wearables on though - I heart wearables - gives a little cyborgy feel to me to gear up. - Felix12gHonored GuestI wonder if the reason they didn't go with say mounted IR dots on a glove was so that it would just be a wrist mounted unit so people could use it in all situations?
Wouldn't mounted IR points on say a glove remove the need for the laser line + diffuse and comparing the two images to check depth? At that point you'd be making something almost completely different though.
As far as the iron man point there, you could still do it, the trigger would simply be not tracking any fingers. As soon as no fingers are in view, trigger the event. Add in a duration delay to act as a sort of dead zone. - bum87Honored Guestand also could be cheaper, with IR dots on both sides of your fingers and the IR camera mounted more to the internal side of your arm the thumb and iron man hand could be solved, but for that this seem to be a better solution but a bit more expensive one http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=oWu9TFJjHaM
