Color Profile

Will there be a color profile for the DK2, like an icc file made from a calibrator? I assume the color gamut of the panel is around %100 sRGB? Also, I read that the dk2 will have a properly calibrated gamma ramp, will it also be calibrated considering the unique viewing conditions, like luminance/black point/contrast/temperature?

  • Mobile displays wont support 100% sRGB most of the time but a bit less than than (same goes for notebook screens, even desktop screens are often not full sRGB - even those that claim to be).
As all screens differ a bit, you would need to profile each Rift individually (time consuming and expensive) and that ICC profile would not be valid for long, as the characteristics change over time (that's why you need to re-profile your screen at home every one or two month and don't get a profile from the factory and be done with it).

And would it be worth the effort? We are talking about presenting and not creating the content...
  • If presenting isn't a factor then stick to 720p. Panels supplied by the factory don't have great default characteristics and the manufacturers settings arn't great, that's my point. Even a general panel profile would be consistantly better than no profile, no individual calibrartion necessary, just spend and hour sampling a few panels with a LacIE calibrator. Default settings have to be set anyway.

And with the blue lifespan being a weakpoint of OLEDs, if they are overly saturated or cooler in general then you are contributing to the degrade in color accuracy, and if the gamma curve is wrong then you risk unneccesary screen burn, all the more reason to calibrate it.

Also having a panel strapped to your face for hours warrants the consideration of properly calibrated gamma values.

Would like to know if this is a newer OLED panel and has improved the blue degradation and screen burn issues though.
