Congrats Oculus (Oculus Rift S)
I’ve just got to say coming from the DK1, CV1 and now to the Rift S. They nailed it! Almost all of my big annoyances have been fixed with the Rift S (and software advances since last playing 2 years ago).
The halo strap makes everything more comfortable with less headset movement while playing and less feeling like your face is squished - feels more balanced on your actual head, no more light bleed below your nose, hardly any godrays, no more touchy “sweet spot” in the lenses..much easier to just put the headset on and get a clear picture, no more sensor installation or adjusting sensors for coverage or going too far from the sensors where you movements become low quality and bouncy, no more dedicating a room to VR..the VR goes where you want it to on demand, no more taking off your headset to adjust or see your play area or even talking to people in real life (I set it up to display pass-through mode when clicking the dash button), no more need to take off your headset to do anything on your desktop ( I had a much bigger virtual screen of my desktop overlayed in AR where my real monitor is in pass through mode), No more taking off headset to setup guardian because of the AR setup process (MUCH quicker guardian setup since you take a few seconds to draw), no more physical IPD adjustment settings being inadvertently changed during play sessions by having your face squish against the screen causing the adjustment switch to move around, way clearer display, no more default Rift headphones getting in the way but still being able to easily plug in my own headphones and have sound without headphones plugged in, steam VR is finally well integrated and also don’t need to take your headset off to switch over, no more height changing differences when switching to steam VR. I also did not experience ANY fogging while play superhot this time around. Not sure if that’s the headset or my new air circulation setup but all went great! I also noticed no eye strain after 5 hours of play.
Just everything feels perfect, the way VR should be. I bought the Rift S lastnight and literally did not take the headset off for 5 hours after I put it on because I simply did not need to... to adjust anything or see my play space or dog getting in the way. I yanked out my headphones and had the brand new pre-bent from the box headset cords tangle but switched on pass through and sorted it out with no problems. The AR in VR is incredible too. I felt like a cyborg or terminator talking to people coming in my room with the headset on seeing them in greyscale 3D pass through with AR elements in my vision walking out of my play space into the bathroom knowing where I’m going and how much cord I have left, them wondering how I’m talking to them and seeing them with a headset on. VR is ready for prime time!
Not to mention when I’m not playing VR this whole experience is connected with 1 cord to the headset that can be unplugged and put back into the box and out of my desk space after each use. Unlike my previous wall sensor based setup where I kept a room dedicated and everything connected because it was too inconvenient to unplug everything or move it elsewhere. Convenient and quality VR is here.
