Consider me an end user

Hello - first post!

Please read in its entirety, there are a couple of questions and a bit of a preamble.

Ok, I'm a "tech head" - not on a level like you guys, but a tech head all the same (electrician by occupation - before you start flinging mouse mats at me).

Yes I know it's a development kit, I know that, I have had it working on my main desktop and was awesomely impressed - even though I had to unplug all my three screens and then go in using remote access from a laptop to rotate the screen to use it, I was amazed honestly. Although I did take over an hour to get all three screens working again and will not be plugging it in while my arse faces south.

So I installed it into my laptop with the intention of streaming from the desktop with steam using the GTX980 card in the desktop to run the games. Failed, got BSoD and had to do a restore, but hey - I get it, it's a development kit.

So I'm gonna build a rig just for the Oculus itself using the older AMD6690 that just got replaced, no biggy.

QUESTION TIME ! ! !

QUESTION 1

I know its a DK - BUT it will (hopefully) one day be a full product, so with that in mind, and at the perspective of an end user WHY? WHY!!!!!????? do I have to rotate the screen? I know there will be a solid tech answer, but it's rather like the company I sometimes contract to and the RnD has come out with something funky - IT HAS TO BE EXCEPTABLE TO THE CUSTOMER! I can see straight away that screen rotating isn't going to cut the mustard, for the end user or the game developer, so why is it there to start with? As I understand (perhaps wrongly - probably wrongly, most likely wrongly, just ask the wife, you have no idea how much I specialise in wrongly) - that the first DK was orientated correctly.

So could an Uber tech head dumb it down for me please.

QUESTION 2

How do I get my avatar up and running - I fee naked without it!

FOOT NOTE

What game did I play on the Oculus? Borderlands the pre sequel

Claptrap - I was Claptrap for my first VR experience - I may need counselling too!

"Wubwubwub. Dubstep dubstep. Wubwubwubwub DROP!"

    Hi,

please read about direct mode compared to extended desktop mode. Only in extended desktop mode you have to fumble around with multiple desktops and wrong orientation.

I don't expect any commercial product to be released that needs extended desktop mode. I would even expect that Oculus remove this mode entirely with the finished product. it is just too cumbersome for end users. It has its advantages during development, because it is easier to see 'something' on the rift. But once your code is able to use the rift in direct mode there is no need to use extended mode whatsoever.
