Controller idea (Just a thought)
I just had an idea (maybe it's not even new, but I didn't hear anything about this up untill now).
We all know the problem with haptic feedback, especially in shooter games.
Of course, there're many solutions with reproduced guns. But if you change the gun in the game, you still have the same "feeling" in your hand which can be strange sometimes.
My Idea: add a small weight and make it automatically adjustable.
You could automatically change the balance point, according to the weapon you holding in the game.
If this mechanism is fast enough you could even simulate the rebound from the shooting.
This would be much nicer than just the wellknown rumble systems.
If this is already well known and used in some products - just ignore this post.
But I just had to write it down.

The haptics reactive grip for the razer hydra is probably a better option to emulate the sensation that you want. While a movable weight will probably be more realistic, it will be rather heavy in order to have the desired effect, and heavy controllers will put a lot of strain on your arms/hands when you're playing. - DeyerethHonored GuestPM me. I can you help with the physics, such a device would be really nice to have and quite easy to build and implement.
- BlackMageHonored GuestTactical haptics can only give you the sensation of immediate forces, a moving weight could solve sustained forces to an extent. If we're just theory crafting technically a small, high powered, zero safety propulsion system at the top of a controller would give you the whole deal.
- ScratchHonored GuestOr, we need an relatively big electromagnet under our feet, and weapon controller with metal weights. The stronger the current, the heavier the weapon. Maybe even some kind of metal vest. When you have looted too much stuff to carry, you will definitelly notice it :)
- BlackMageHonored GuestEven better is completely surrounded by relatively big electromagnets, then you can experience forces in every direction.
- LiamDMExplorerAs you want to "add" mass, you need to have a contact force (something physically touching the console). It's impossible to add mass to something if you are connected to only it (I know this isn't true, but for the purpose of this it is) or you violate the law of conservation of energy.
But, with the greenhat way of thinking, one simpler way would be to shift the mass, using water chambers. Have the gun with chambers of water in the top. This could make it heavier at one end, and then via pumps, you could shift the water closer to the palm, which would make it feel lighter.
(just want to say, the whole electromagnet talk made me have a good laugh) - sebastianpHonored GuestHow about using a blowback airsoft rifle? Maybe since you don't need to shoot anything you could send all the air pressure to the blowback to get a better effect.
- ScratchHonored GuestLiamDM, glad you found the idea of haptics via electromagnets amusing. But to tell you the truth, if it was not clear, I was being serious. Like BlackMage was serious with the small zero safety propulsionsystem.
- LiamDMExplorerHhahah, Scratch??? Wow, if that is the case, please build this, this sounds totally safe :P, but would be fun to use none the less, and would be amazing! Any initial "ideas" as for how to actually build this at a cheap price?
And I wasn't trying to be rude by the way, I honestly thought you were joking (it does sound pretty far fetched to be honest), but am fully supportive if this would actually work!!! I never thought about this seriously before, but looking into it, it may actually pose a potential way of doing things like this. - ScratchHonored GuestSarcasm is a hard art to master and I failed miserably! :) I was not serious, but I actually thought that you thought I was ;) That's why I posted my last comment, ment to be sarcastic. Sorry about that.
I think I won't be building electromagnetic haptic device, no matter how neat it sounds :D
