Depth?

Hey guys im looking into possibly making some videos using a 360 degree camera like the one from Bubl or the other one. Im really curious as to what videos look like on the Rift. I am getting the DK2 and im just dying to know what 360 degree videos feel like. Does it just feel like your watching a video on a MASSIVE screen. OR do you get depth feeling or at least the feeling like you are sort of in that place. I guess my best example is. IF you had some go pros and rigged it like people have and went to the ledge of a building. What would the person wearing the rift feel? Would they somewhat feel the HEIGHT? That's pretty much all im wondering about. Thanks!!

  • If the 360 camera is moving -- like on a car or a skydivers helmet -- it sometimes gives a good impression of being there and sort of 3d. But if the camera is stationary -- like on a concert stage -- it often looks even flatter than normal I think. The fact that both eyes are seeing the exact same image convinces your brain it is at a fixed distance and is flat!
  • OK so a 360 camera for depth probably is not the best idea.

Now im looking for DEPTH ideas here so what about a 3d camera? Lets say I only wanted 180 degree viewing area. Is there anyway to make it work.

Basicially what im getting at is I want to be able to take the camera to a ledge and record and have the person wearing the rift FEEL the height. How do I go about that? Even if it's not perfect id like them to be able to look up down left and right. They dont have to see backwards. But just some movement on the rift.

If still interested in 360° spherical stereoscopic 3D have a look at my experiments.

The Elmo might be one of the simpler 360° 2D rigs available.

If you have a smart phone and access to some cheap magnifying lenses you can make a Google Cardboard to get an idea of what it will be like.

I have viewed the same video in both 2D and 2D on the Rift and find the 2D version so much more immersive. I have a DK2 arriving on Tuesday. I anticipate that after playing some true 3D games that allow me to look around corners that I will want my Stereoscopic 3D videos to be true 3D too. But I think I will be happy with S3D. I will know more by the end of the week after I have played some.
  • Or you could close one eye and get sort of more 3d :D
Try it and wait for 1-2 minutes.
