Direct mode issue with DK2?

I've been having a problem where whenever I enable direct mode, only a few games seem to work (that from what I understand are built with the 0.4 SDK). For whatever reason the display is not outputted...

The only game I can get to work with direct mode is Oculus World demo. Everything else that supposedly supports it simply crashes unless I do extended mode.
