DK2 adjustable focus lenses
I was doing some research on an adjustable focus lenses for the DK2 and what I found is that you could use something called a diopter to adjust for eye focus. I'm fairly sure this is the part but what I'm making reference to the adjustable eye focus on a DSLR camera viewfinder and I was wondering if that could be put into the Oculus Rift lenses. That way I'll only need a single pair over 3 pairs of lenses and I'll can use the oculus glasses free.
My B lenses are slowly getting scratched to oblivion from my glasses.
Do you think this would work?

- cyberealityGrand ChampionIt's technically possible, but didn't make sense to include into DK2 (it adds complexity). It works by basically changing the distance between the lens and the screen (which is what the different eye-cups do, they all have the same lens in them). Because of this, it creates moving parts that complicate the design and didn't make it into DK2. I would like adjustable optics, and will bug the team to put this into the consumer version.

+1 - jpaws1Honored GuestIf possible try to sell these for the DK2 before the consumer release, maybe even for the DK1 as well.
Also try making them digitally adjusted would give finer control of the focus for the CK1.
I find with the DK1 if I have the focus slightly blurry it removes the window screen effect without lowering quality. - ElectricMucusExplorerIf you have access to a 3D Printer you could just make some rings that fit the lenses and the recess they are mounted on.
- jpaws1Honored GuestI'm just taking a guess by what you mean but all the lenses that came with the oculus DK1 are the same lens just the distance to the screen is different. In that case...
I was thinking about using 2 rings with threads. The inside ring that mounts the lens has pop bottle style threads on the outside of the ring and has a catch rim on the bottom of the inside ring. The outside ring has threads on the inside and attaches to the oculus, both rings are cone shaped. This is the best answer I can come up with at the moment.
Downside about this style is that the FOV changes when making adjustments. A lens on the inside could make the FOV stay the same.
Upside, its cheap and easy to make.
The lens rings would also need a way to lock the twist with a easy to access button or switch. Some easy to see number indicators.
I'll buy some oculus or 3rd party lenses and focus adjustment mounts if anyone makes them. - BoffExplorer

Isn't that what the adjusters on the side of the DK1 do already though? So could you just increase the range? Or would it be too great? - ElectricMucusExplorerI was thinking, if some way of adjusting lens focus is provided it might be a good way to find an individual compromise between screen-door-ish-ness, and sharpness.
The adjustment might be quite small but have dramatic effects. If for instance the focus plane is at the depth of the oled subpixels themselves the image might appear incredibly sharp but you would notice individual subpixels if the focus is good enough. But the Lenses could also be focused on the polymer cover of the screen which would provide a scattering effect.
You can easily test this with manually with any lens on basically every display, it's really quite apparent. - rupyHonored Guest

If the lenses are the same you could have the cups and lenses separated with a similar twist contraption with which the cups attach to the frame, and only provide A-cups with the kit and you could order your prescription cups separately reusing your lenses? - WoodeeHonored GuestI am hoping there is an easy solution for users of the rift with glasses. A matter of entering in the numbers on your prescription and the rift is set.
I am not technically minded when it comes to these things, just a concerned glasses wearer with different strengths in each eye. - cyberealityGrand Champion

No. The adjustments on the side move the entire assembly (screen and lenses) so it does not change the focus. It just makes it easier if people need more space for their eyes (i.e. they have glasses, etc.).
