Not hard to cause headaches and motion sickness in VR, almost impossible in the theater. - geekmasterProtege

It really depends on head-tracking latency in the headset, and total FoV (even in a theater).
I normally sit front row center at movie theaters (for maximum FoV), and some action sequences can cause motion sickness.
I used to play Descent while sitting five feet from my 11-foot projections screen, and that REALLY caused motion sickness. So just a large FoV alone (with ZERO head tracking latency) can cause that. Over time (a long series of slightly longer play sessions), I got over the problem, much like how you get your "VR legs" when learning to adapt to long VR play" sessions.
However, the real claim from that linked study is that it does not impair coordination, and perceived motion sickeness may be subjective based on expected results, with no tested physical symptoms to support the reported ill effects.
Perhaps the reduced FoV (far less than 270-degrees) of many HMDs is to reduce motion sickess, besides reducing the amount of processing power required (reduced-sized frustum culling).
Nonetheless, I want my maximum FoV, and I am willing to put in the effort to adapt to it as necessary, just like I did with Descent on my huge FoV projector. - jm3laHonored Guesti myself as a new rift user had serious problems with motion sickness,
when i got it i could manage 5 mins tops before id have to take a break,
i now feel no motion sickness while playing games such as elite dangerous for extended periods of time.
as many have said it's really a case of getting your vr legs
