Driving the panel at 120hz?

I apologize if this has been asked before, I searched the forums and didn't find a specific answer. My questions is, has anyone tried to force 120hz timing via Nvidia control panel?

  • No, but I have considered attempting to run my rift on a 1.21 gigawatt power supply.

Seriously though, why would you do something like this? Neither the timing chip or the LCD are rated for 120hz. At best you will get no display. At worst you will damage your hardware.
  • Well, the reason being is that I tried this with my TV (Vizio passive 3D) and was surprised that it does indeed support 120hz over HDMI even though Vizio states it doesn't. It seems a lot of LCD panels (including mobile panels) are capable of being driven at 120hz. I didn't know the timing chip was limited to 60hz though.
  • There is an okd thread somewhere. I think you can go to approx 74Hz until glitches starts appearing. Depends on the unit.
  • The Rift EDID says it supports up to 76Hz, but people who tried this reported annoying color artifacts when going faster than 71Hz. More info here:

And more details (including a link to a simple tool to modify display timings in the Windows registry) here:

And a possible explanation for the color artifacts when running faster than 71Hz here:

  • Geekmaster, do you by any chance know what the panel itself is rated for? Has anyone tried bypassing the controller? Or would bypassing it cause synch issues with the motion sensors?

No. Check the threads I linked in my previous post. Ask there. Those are some threads where those who study that stuff hang out.
    ;)
  • Most ips panels can't be driven all that fast. But anything higher than 60hz, even just 70hz, will be an improvement.
