Dual 1440p monitors + DK2

Is it possible? What are the hardware requirements? Especially now that we need to run displays at least at 75hz.

I primarily work in UE4 and have become accustomed to having a dual monitor setup for development. I can't ever go back to single monitor to do work. I've also become spoiled by a 1440p monitor and want to get another for a dual 1440p setup. Is it possible to use the same rig to run a DK2? With my DK1, this is possible because I use the DVI cable for the rift, but i'm sure with the increased resolution of DK2 and increased frequency requirement, a DVI output no longer provides adequate data bandwidth. (Am I wrong?) If so, I think I can run a 1440p monitor at 60hz with a dvi adapter, run the other monitor at 75hz on hdmi, and the rift at 75hz on hdmi as well.

Does anyone have experience trying this?

It is pretty much as you say:
HDMI will run your 1440p up to 120Hz.
Dual link DVI will run 1440p up to 60Hz or 1080p up to 120Hz.

If you are using an adapter on the DVI port then just make sure it supports dual link and you should be fine to run either your 1440p screens or Rift (1080p) off it, so in your case I would go for your 1440p monitors off HDMI and your Rift off dual link DVI adapted to HDMI to get them all running at 75Hz (or if your monitors support it 120Hz).

    P.S. You can run DK2 @ 60Hz but obviously that's less then ideal ;)

I have two 1440p ASUS monitors + the DK2 running off of one GTX780.

Each monitor is running off dual link dvi and the rift is off hdmi and I can have all three going at the same time.
I don't think there's a necessity for all of your monitors to run at the same refresh rate.
My monitors run at 60hz and my DK2 runs at 75hz.
  • Great! Just the information I was looking for. Thanks guys!

I've heard that it is impossible to run dual 1440p monitors at 120hz even with top of the line cards simply because you need to maintain 120 fps on while pushing 1440p pixels on two monitors. You could have your monitors set to 120hz, but it isn't really showing you 120hz because your framerate can't keep up due to the massive number of pixels your card has to render.

I doubt I'll be doing 120hz on either monitor though. And if worse comes to worse, i'll just disable them while rifting. :D

If your monitors support 120Hz even if you cant output 120fps I would set them to that just because they will still refresh at 120Hz regardless of your frame rate which IMO looks a bit more "solid" and even if you're in the 60-120fps range its still better then limiting yourself to 60fps, not to mention some things may even be able to run at 120+fps (older/simpler games) even if none of your games go over 60fps the desktop will still show some improvement by running at 120fps/Hz. Seems like a waste spending the premium on 1440p 120Hz monitors and not using them.
