duo 3d, open 3d sensor on kickstarter

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/codelabs/duo-the-worlds-first-diy-3d-sensor What do you guys think? Gotta say it looks pretty slick, and supposedly it gives you access to point cloud data, which the leap does not, making it more useful for development. Also given the open nature of the Duo it's possible it could be used for hand, head and anything else tracking. Well within the 50cm range.

  • Wish this caught on sooner. They only have 8 days until there Kickstarter ends. This is something I feel would impact development on other levels

There's really nothing open about it other than perhaps some CAD files for hardware to mount proprietary Sony camera boards. No guarantee that the software will ever be open source.

    look like the leap motion.
short distance (60 cm may be) so you must stay close to the device

I could see this used in something like a Gundam/Mech/flight simulater/cockpit game where you would actually have to operate different controls like a thrust lever or landing gear switches. Would be a very cool way to get even more immersed into a game.

even worse they actually only provide 32bits (closed source) libraries for CL eye, which seems to be at the center of this project.
don't ask for 64bits libraries on their forum ... they'll ignore your questions (4 years without any response on this subject)
