Epic Games donates to Blender Foundation

Hi all,

it seems the guys from Epic are interested in a better workflow for users who use Blender to produce assets and other stuff for use with the Unreal Engine 4.

https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?16011-Epic-Donates-to-the-Blender-Foundation#post90183

Our goals for supporting the Blender Foundation are:

1. Ensure a smooth FBX workflow between blender and UE4.

We basically want to make sure there is a smooth export/import pipeline between Blender and UE4 and UE4 uses FBX. Improving Blender's FBX pipeline is going to be beneficial outside of just UE4 interoperability.

2. Find a way to harmonize controls between blender and UE4.

Given Blender's extensibility and configurability we would like to see an option to have UE4 style viewport controls as an option to make it easier for people to back and forth between tools.

3. Support approachable and free 3D modeling tools to aid community.

As a big fan of both (Blender and UnrealEngine) this is great news for me, so i just wanted to share.

  • Very cool. I use Blender right now and while I've been mostly looking into Unity for VR development, this might cause me to take another look at Unreal.
  • If they can make the UE4 as compatible with Blender as Unity is then it'd be....epic XD I remember trying to get assets into the UE3 and it just never worked right

Indeed great news! If this goes in motion, my UE4/blender experience and work has more meaning now :)

UI integration along with shortcuts? WOULD BE AWESOME (my whiteboard will have more room now as I do not remember all of the shorcuts yet :P)

and.... FBX flawless import to UE4??? To good to be true :P I hope this happens !!! :)

Great News! I'm in the process of learning both Blender and UE4 to get ready for the DK2 so this sounds promising.
  • This is great news indeed. Blender is an excellent free tool, but its fbx support is currently inadequate.

Hey! I use this cheatsheet also :P But mostly I am handwriting my table until I am sure I learned the command for sure (wiping it off replacing by another one). The same with UE4.

Thanks for posting anyway for other people to see :) And also....it came directly from one and only Andrew Price LOL

I cannot express how much of a blessing Blender is right now for me... also to me in its unintuity - IT'S STILL BETTER than 3Ds MAx for me.

    Thanks again!
  • Not that i want to pee on their parade, but 10k euros isn't a huge amount. But yea, better than "a stone on the head", as we Austrians say...
