Experimenting in Panoramic Stereoscopic 3D video
I have a 360° Panoramic stereoscopic 3D multicamera video rig using 14 cameras.
http://photocreations.ca/3D/mobius_camera_rig.html
I have added a new S3D panorama of the sun setting.
http://photocreations.ca/3D/index.html
Unfortunately two of the cameras did not record. The faulty cameras were the left and right view of the exact spot where the sun was going down. The -20°C cold weather meant the cameras did not record as long as I hoped. record time were between 20:48 and 53:50, averaging 37:30 minutes. I compressed the usable 20 minutes footage into a 1 minute timelapse.
I was also testing the quality of locking the white balance of all the cameras; in this case to cloudy. I corrected for the changes the cameras make because of autoexposure but even with whitebalance locked, I should have also corrected for differences in whitebalance.
I have got much better at the aligning and stitching of the videos.
My new interest in 3D panoramic video led me to go back and render in higher resolution my first interactive panoramic video I have published. I shot it in April 2006 before I had any way of showing it.
It is a poker game with the camera positioned over the center of the table. I used my full frame fisheye on my Nikon D70s. I shot my VR video by pointing my camera in different directions for each sequence. I tethered the camera to my computer capturing a jpg image as frequently as I could, every couple seconds.
I published a smaller interactive version in 2008. Over the years I have been told that it has inspired others in the panoramic photography community to create interactive panoramic video. Every time I watch it I want to make it again with a proper video camera and better actors.
To watch it, get the full story, and see how it was made see my site.

- j1vvyHonored GuestI've updated the rig a bit and added a new video.
360° Stereoscopic view of fireworks.

I need need to focus a few of the cameras.
I have since replaced a couple of the cables that I use to extend the lenses from the camera that prevented the camera from recording. - cyberealityGrand ChampionThe hockey video link is broken. It says 404 error.
- j1vvyHonored GuestFixed the broken link and added another video; 2D 360° panoramas.
- kclaiHonored GuestHi Jim,
be ready for the DK2 to view the 3D360 in a more comfortable way, I just pre-ordered one. btw, I found a OEM camera board which use the same processing chip as gopro (Amberalla), and the quality is really good. The most interesting thing is you can control it through a UART command, making the sync like a charm, no more gopro related flaws or difficult wiring on the Morpheus cams. The detached sensor board make it easy for making 3D cams like ours.

This OEM camera board looks promising. Does it have a memory card slot for recording. Please keep us updated on this!
On the personal-view forums they have been making headway with a very compact Point Grey camera for 3d
>>an inexpensive USB3 Flea3 FL3-U3-88S2C-C camera by Point Grey was used as a 4K RAW camera project.>>
This needs an external recorder but has raw imaging potential. Point Grey camera arrays were the most popular for 360 capture until a couple of years ago when Gopros took over

The Amberalla camera looks promising. To have a mobile, 12 camera rig, writing to flash memory is important.
If I ever proved that 3D 360° would work, I was going to see what the best option Point Grey had to offer. There are some global shutter options, But 12 Flea cameras are not inexpensive. I would like to go with 12M instead of C mount to be able to pack the lenses closer together without the rig getting large. I am not sure about how many USB3 connections and SSD drives would be needed to support 12 Flea cameras. First glance 1 camera per USB3, 2 USB3 per PCIe

A solution like this needs the backing of a movie studio.
There is also Elphel camera system. They created the early cameras for Google's multi camera rig for Street view.

http://photocreations.ca/3D/PavilionCup.html - DimaYHonored GuestHi, friends!!! We team of programmers from Russia. Create virtual software under Oculus Rift and want besides Activities Shooting Panoramic video for promotional purposes for the business. Found ready prototypes: Geonaute 360 and Panocam, but it is a prototype and we can~t bye this camera right now. Prompt may be there already working versions of the panoramic cameras on sale???
- TomVRProtegeI would love to see a fully successful stitch of a 3D 360 video. My brain can't understand how you resolve the nodal point offset required for the views. In theory either the cameras would have to see into eachother or there would be huge spacial offsets in the stitches. Also I don't understand why developers seem to want to include above and below, there is no way I can image to resolve those in stereoscopic 3D without inducing massive errors
