Eye exam questions
Hi all,
I'm going to see my eye doctor next week and was wondering what measurements I could ask for besides IPD that are pertinent to VR and the Oculus in particular? Not being an expert on any of this I'm curious to hear all thoughts.

- tomfExplorerIPD can be measured with a variety of convergence distances. If you're looking at something nearby, your eyes converge, and your pupils move closer together! So make sure you ask for your IPD when converging at infinity - that's the one that matters for the Rift. It is always interesting hearing how close the configuration utility gets to what an optometrist finds.
That's the only one that really matters. They will probably also give you the measurements relative to your nose, but unlike glasses we don't rest anything on the nose. - modelmodeHonored GuestJust as a follow up:
During my eye exam my IPD was measured and I was given two different numbers, one for each eye. I was confused because I expected to receive only one distance value. The Dr explained that IPD can be measured as 'monocular' (the pupil distance measured from the center point somewhere on the bridge of the nose) or 'binocular' (pupils are measured one from another). In retrospect monocular makes sense because you might have a different prescription in one eye than the other and thus a different sweet spot on that side. As far as any other important measures goes; she didn't seem to think that there were. It seems to me though that individual eye height might be important. In my case one of my eyes is higher than the other. Only by millimeters mind you , but that might be enough to make a difference. I don't know, I'm not an expert on optics or VR. We're all software developers here right? Are there any ophthalmologists here in the forums? Might be handy to have one around, especially since this tech looks like its got a real chance this time! - modelmodeHonored Guest

Thanks for the advice, but too late. Luckily they did give the the distance calculation. The utility gave me a measure of 64.3 the eye doc gave me 62. - tomfExplorer

It's certainly important, but if you just align the Rift vertically with both of your eyes at the same time (so now it will be very slightly slanted on your head), everything will work fine! - modelmodeHonored Guest*Update* After a few days of using the proper IPD, I can report that it makes a helluva difference. I used both Oculus's own config utility and TF2's utility multiple times, and I was still off enough to make me cross eyed for 10-15 min after taking the Rift off. Now I'm only seeing double for 30 sec or so and the experience in the Rift is better. Seriously, go get your IPD professionally measured; and if your like me, and haven't had an eye exam for about 20 years get one while your at it. In fact, if you just ask for an IPD you might get it for free.
- rkatosHonored GuestFrequency of eye exams: You should be getting an eye exam every two years ages twenty to forty. After that, every year. There is more to eye health than refractive correction. Eye exams can early detect other diseases as well.
- kellanbrHonored GuestIs it safe for me to clean my contact lenses with a homemade solution?
Can you answer this question? - QosmiusHonored Guestno...never use any forms of cleansing on contact lenses except for lens water-Optometristudent
- rupyHonored GuestSo I have this problem that my right eye is a tiny bit too bad for the C-cups. Can I get my optician to give me a correction glass for the difference between my left eye (which is perfect for the C-cups) and the right eye and just tape it to the right C-cup?
- cyberealityGrand Champion@rupy: Do you wear glasses or contacts? I'm no doctor, but might be worth looking into.
