Now that Unreal Engine is offered on a monthly $19 USD payment, instead of the upfront millions, and thus becoming accesible to indie developers that usually can't afford it, will the Unreal Engine forum become public? Or will it stay the same?
  • To my knowledge, the unreal engine has never been as expensive as millions. As far as I know, the highest it's ever been was $750,000 for the royalty free edition of UE2, and you could get a royalty version for $300,000.

Still, obviously $19+ 5% is much much much cheaper, but the bright people at unreal have realized the potential of having 1,000,000 users instead of 1,000. Think about if you had a success story like minecraft. Minecraft currently makes over $100,000,000 a year last I heard. 5% of that's still $5m a year for doing literally nothing at that point. And while it's not much, that's also $200 a year roughly speaking.

You have 3-4 of those a year and you are rolling in money. Pointing that out makes it a little easier to understand eh?

I have a feeling that Unity will probably drop it's subscription price to match or get close at least, either that or just do away with subscriptions again. Epic has shown that they see unity as a threat by doing this subscription model (IMO), so we'll see what unity comes up with.
