Getting Rift sensor data in Adobe Air

Hi everyone! Been lurking around here for a while (with only one post until now) and I decided to quickly show off what I've been bashing my head against for a few days now.

This is a simple Air app running on Windows 8 that displays the Rift sensor data, updated every frame. It uses an Adobe Native Extension to interact with the Rift. The ANE is, like all ANEs, made up of a Windows DLL that is more or less the Minimal Oculus Application from the Wiki tutorials with some modifications to make it play nice with Flash (not easy!!!), an Actionscript 3 library (the language used to write the logic behind Flash/Air apps) that shares the same methods as the DLL, and some XML data to combine the two.

The app itself is simply a Flex app that makes use of the ANE by initializing the Rift, getting the sensor data every frame, and then clearing and closing down the Rift and the native extension.

More to come soon, pending brain damage!

  • Nice work man! I guess that is the hardest part.

I assume you will be combining this with some 3D graphics. What library or engine will you be using?
  • Thanks! I was probably going to use Away3D, but another cool guy has that going on in another thread so I'll see what his implementation looks like and probably mess around a bit from there. Real life has been keeping me out of the virtual though so I'm sure it'll be a while!

Don't let this project (or your "real" job) melt your brain, while you keep up the great work! :D
