Ground Immersion System Development.

Hi guy's
Just joined the forum and looking forward to what the rift should bring to gaming. I've been developing a form of input which has all the details on the oculus rift community forum under , development , ground immersion systems. Please check out my latest video as Ive notice a few of you taking about balance board. The video shows me playing Haken competitively online with ease. Using this basic concept. My project is now in phase two of the build and I'm very pleased with what I've achieved so far. I'm currently typing on my phone and copy and paste is a nightmare. Type in your search bar groundimmersionsystems.com this will take you to my video's. I've just signed a NDA with a major company and things are looking good. Let me know what you think?

  • It's a good idea, we were discussing something very similar on the mtbs3d forums and now here on oculusvr, I've made a pair of proof of concept videos back in November

I'm glad someone is going to make it for real

I did't go into making it myself because I thought it needed a more engineered hardware and I wasn't able to do it, something similar to a gamepad thumbstick, with a centering spring, because it's hard to have a stable feet stand on the balance board, expecially during the most intense game sessions, plus it's annoying when it hurts the floor.
Why don't you try to add four springs under the platform, to allow a more natural and precise control?
Something like this other foot controller (though it emulates keystrokes so doesn't have any analog progression, it's mainly aimed to RTS/MMO genres rather than VR)

You could also add rotating (you need a sensor with included magnetometer to avoid drift) so there's no need to use a mouse at all with an oculus rift!

The scene is starting to populate with foot controllers, the stinky footboard is already on kickstarter, are you thinking to go the same way?
I hope you the best of luck :)

Sounds like this would be a pretty stationary piece of hardware with a single rotation axis, so I'd think a basic digital rotory encoder could be much more accurate in this case, with no real possibility of drift :-)

I'd buy one! Let us know when the Kickstarter is up. :)

You're right, but in this case he has to design a stationary base on which the board is mechanically connected, so he'd end up with a thumbstick-like foot controller and he would also replace the gyroscopes with simple potentiometer, thus he needs a completely redisegned unit that will cost much more R&D time for him and more money for the consumers (and I think it would be worth it if he can build it!)
  • Guy's I'm very grateful for your input but what your seeing in my video is not the big picture. All the design issues your speaking about have been solved a few months ago. I've been using the board over the last month now and after a few hours of using it, it become so natural to use your balance and once the calibration is set correctly its just sweet. I can't express how good Hawken feels with this. When I recorded my video the other night I ended up playing for a solid seven hour's and loved every minute of it.This is not just designed for the rift its also got benefits for left handed player's and people with disabilities . There's about another two moths until I reveal the big picture and when I do I hope you like it. Iwouldn't even put this out there if I wasn't confident with what I have.
