Has the Oculus changed anyone into a developer!
It sure has with me. I have always been curious about game development but since I've seen the rift I decided to dive headfirst into it.
Anybody else in the same boat?

- 3dvrmonsterExplorerIt has done more than bring me into game development personally... it has carried me into a techno revolution that I have always wanted to see flourish. Thats what it is to me... the future! Also I think you will need a ship for as many people that the rift has offered the potential for work. Happy sailing!
- knackHonored Guestfor me change for be hobby dev to try something more serious.
And the begin in game developing. - SharpfishHeroic ExplorerNo, but it has renewed my interest! :D
I started messing with coding in the late 80s (Basic) on the spectrum, then made some Amiga shareware/license-ware games (nothing amazing but fun to make and got paid for them!).
First PC "dev" experience started in 98 just making maps for the Unreal series (partly why I like using UE4 now as it's my comfort zone  ), that was a lot of fun and people mostly enjoyed them, but stopped doing that when UT3 came out...
Then got into windows programming and indie games development (checkout indiegamer forum, hung around there for years; a great resource for actually doing business with indiegames), made my own basic DX8 3D engine, got a website set up selling games and affiliate games, then got a job in the industry 'for real' with Codemasters (Juice studio/Race Driver/Various roles) for a couple of years, left to go 'full indie', merged my game engine with free 3D engine Irrlicht (as it was better than my own effort), then took a hiatus while working on other projects (namely music)... I am now using UE4 for VR and will be rebuilding my own 3D VR engine on the side (should I ever need to break free from Epic's engine)
My mini life story aside, VR appears to have been what I was waiting for back when I was getting tainted/burned out by development in the late 2000s. So it has made me return with renewed vigour, as I was losing enthusiasm for traditional gaming *development* (esp with the casual takeover and mobile markets becoming the mainstream). - YbalridExpert ProtegeIt made me jump into 3D programming.
It's with the perspective of playing with a rift that I started to look at how some free/open-source 3D engine workes (irrlicht/ogre) - AnonymousThe launch of Oculus Rift and UE4 made me a game developer. Have been working professionally as a dev for 10 years, but playing with virtual reality is a dream come true.
- MannyLectroExplorerI was nothing but a student in Game Design/CG Art when I first got the Rift, now I am CEO of a company working on a crazy project for the Rift with 5 other associates. I guess I am a developer now :D !
- mptpExplorerIn a weird synchronicity, I first heard about the rift maybe 8 months ago. I got into programming and computers about 9 months ago very abruptly - before that I was a complete luddite who hated computers. In fact, I was basically a hippie, into permaculture and planning on moving to a rural area. I discovered Pure Data and started programming, then learned Java. Then I heard about the Rift, transitioned into C# so that I could work with Unity, and waited for the DK2 to be announced.
So it's funny - I would never have even heard about the rift this time last year, since I never went on the internet and hated computers. But just as I start becoming a super-techie, I discover the Rift and I find that I'm perfectly positioned to start developing for it. I already have like 3 demos that are just waiting for my Rift to arrive so I can integrate it. :D - jtelferProtegeI've been in IT for about 17 years, first as a developer and then into architecture. I try and keep my hand in as much as possible and I've been doing some interesting stuff with Ruby, Python and Neo4j lately.
I've tried dabbling with game dev stuff before, but the Rift has really hooked me into the idea of it and I've subscribed to UE4 to see just how much (or how little) one person working alone can achieve.
I've also been into 3D rendering bits over the years so I have an up to date Vue Complete licence and a paid up version of World Machine to work with, so it'll be interesting to see if I can come up with anything. - museumsteveProtegeI subscribed to UE4 last night to take my frist steps. The DK1 was such an eye-opener (literally) that I really felt I needed to do something myself to be a part of this revolution.
First disappointment was finding that my i7 Vaio laptop may not be good enough, even though it's only a couple of years old and my main gaming PC is hooked up in another room to my racing sim so I guess I'll have to build something new.
I'm a retro gamer at heart so I plan to concentrate on re-telling some classics, without infringing copyright of course  - RazTOOHonored GuestNot a developer yet .... well not a professional one :P Let's call it a "MYSELFdeveloper" LOL :P
I am a mechanical engineer specialising in mechatronics. I did my fair time of AutoCAD and CATIA V5 3d designing (among other 3D software) in germany and poland. I currently work as a product manager (sadly less engineering, but more communication). I support known customers from automotive industry for Europe in my company.
I was lucky to order and get my DK1 after seeing a HD prototype @gamescom cologne.
As jtelfer wrote I am also Impressed how much one person can achieve with soooo much easier than before tools like UE4 and Blender (they became more accesible lately).
I like to create things in my free time. RIFT + UE4 + Blender is the most exiting thing that could happen lately.
Ability to recereate for ex. the whole end scene from LawnmoverMan with these tools now??? - EPIC!!!
That being said, I am filling my free time with Oculus and UE4/Blender whenever I can :) And happy to CREATE!
Sadly... where I live currently there are none people who share the same interest.... (Internet to the rescue - luckily :P)
Happy creating and rifting - good times are HERE AGAIN! VR FTW!
