Hasbro Lazer Tag

There was a sale over the weekend on Hasbro's Lazer Tag AR gun/ios app, so I picked up a 2-pack (sadly, it's $20 more now on Amazon. Target has been reported to have them on sale still):

I got mine today and played with it a bit, and I have to say: pairing a $20 hunk of mass-produced plastic (or a bespoke 3d printed variant) with the much more expensive and sensor laden device I *always* have with me seems like a great way to navigate VR, and hasbro seems to have one built already.

Anybody know anyone at Hasbro? I'm guessing if they opened this up as a platform, it would be very useful to a lot of people on this list.

  • That's interesting! I think you meant to post a link to these instead http://www.amazon.com/Lazer-Tag-Single- ... pd_sim_t_2

Perhaps someone could write an IOS app to interface with those without Hasbro having to do anything. Not sure how practical it would be to use one of those with the Rift since you couldn't see the screen while wearing goggles. Perhaps it could be hacked into something useful. Depends on how they work. They may use ifrared like the old laser Tag or perhaps its using the accelerometers in the iphone.. or both. Neat stuff though. Sort if makes me wish I was a kid again. :)
  • I'm thinking you wouldn't need the screen of the phone. The Rift is all the screen you need. You're really just using the sensors to track your movement in space, and then send that telemetry to the PC, so it can incorporate it into the game.

I think the question I want to answer is basically: could I make a "power band" with my phone that slips around my wrist and use it as an aiming device in 360 degrees?
