I am new to Oculus.
Hey all, I am new to Oculus, and all to the things that come with it.
I really want to try it, so I am going to order one kit of my own really soon.
I searched the forumus for guides for begginers like how to even play and plug in the most simple game like the roller coaster but I could not find it.
Any help? Thanks!

- JargonHonored GuestHi there!
The Rift should be mostly plug-and-play if the game you wish to play supports it, such as the Oculus demos. If not, you can use third party drivers such as VireIO to enable hacky support for bigger games like Skyrim. - cyberealityGrand Champion

Same here. However, I JUST ordered mine today. I'm told it will arrive in September.
I'm really excited to get to work and learn as much as I can. It's important because
I'm in art school right now. Initially I was majoring in VFX but switched to 3D modeling & animation.
Trying to open the doors for both film and game dev. Took a trip to Bungie, met with an alumni from our school.
He told me that a reel and demo showing I can work with a game engine was vital. Oculus is the fire that pretty much
lights under my rear end to get in gear and learn an engine. When I saw your post, i immediately wondered
what engine is best to use, then a ton of questions followed. Any leads to the best way to develop for the Rift
is greatly appreciated. All I know is that Digital Tutors is a massive help for learning in the meantime.
If there are any specific areas in this forum to help get us beginners started, that would be awesome. Glad to be here! - Radaen55Honored GuestGood evening Oculus users!
I'm also a newbie, DEV Kit 2 user, and wanted to share a little important fact that I'm running into as a start-up. Just received my DEV kit 2 ( Version 1.4 / SDK 0.4.1) today and so far the equipment set-up when smoothly. I'm running an Alienware 18 with windows 7. My system runs Nvidia graphics card and has the control panel. Here is where the rub I came into for the software part! This might help some folks that might hit the same thing I did.
1. Download the Oculus Runtime Utility. This will help you turn on the Rift via software side. Because right now - you probably have an "Orange" light on your headset and the camera is off. Orange on your headset means you are not receiving a video signal from the computer. We can fix this.
2. Start up the Utility. The controls on the start up should help you set the parameters of the headset itself. What you need to do next is at this point, is access the "Rift Display Mode". THIS IMPORTANT! If you are like me - the camera will stay off until you make the change in this panel.
3. My camera was still off and my Oculus headset is still showing "Orange" or no video signal. This part you can correct one of two ways. 1st: in the Oculus Runtime Config Utility - go under the tab at the top of the window => tools/Rift Display Mode "Or right click on the Oculus icon on the bottom right of the main windows screen on your personal desktop - then access "Rift Display Mode".
4. Once in the "Rift display mode", you want to click the radio button for "Extend Desktop to HMD" and click apply. It might lag for a second or two, but your main monitor should shift it's resolution AND now your Rift should display the windows screen image! Your camera should now turn on and the light should go "Blue" and the Oculus will also turn "Blue".
5. Uh oh! My view screen is "sideways". If you are displaying the Main monitor and the Rift together - this will help as you orient the Oculus. First, using the main monitor - right click in the main windows area and select "Screen Resolution".
6. Inside the Screen Resolution window, you will need to the drop down menu for "Orientation" and if your like me - change it from "Landscape" to "Portrait". This will flip your side right side up in the Oculus while on it's side in the Main Monitor.
My next challenge for me is to fit my resolution to my Oculus. Any suggestions would be welcome. Hope this helps!
