Immersion: a cheap(ish) way to combat nausea
I got my Rift this morning, and I'm trying to put it through it's paces. I'm ramping up the time I spend I can spend immersed, but I have been experiencing some nausea, as have a few others who tried the headset with me this afternoon.
However, I'm happy to report to that I may have discovered a cheap(ish) way to increase immersion and combat the brain/body dyskinesia while immersed:

http://www.amazon.com/Stamina-55-1610-InMotion-Elliptical-Trainer/dp/B000VICRO8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369781776&sr=8-1&keywords=inmotion+compact+elliptical+trainer
This is a simple elliptical trainer that I've been using at my standup desk. It's got a step counter, but is otherwise "dumb". Using the Tuscany demo, I basically just used the trainer to mimic the motion of walking. I found it to be a significant aid in minimizing nausea. And you can play with your stride to get different effects - a slower stride made it feel more like I was riding a bike.
I bet an arduino whiz could turn this or something similar into a cheap, effective input device. Can anyone point me towards somebody with the skills?

- zaptruderProtegeI achieved similar results by walking on the spot.
I believe the most important element here is to get a natural head bob going on (i.e. your head is physically bobbing up and down) - and that the view somewhat translates in the Rift is great as well (small angle changes simulate visual head bob). - craigotronHonored GuestI am finding that I can spend longer periods of time immersed as I get more acquainted with the headset. Still, I can't help but feel that if my motions on the tread stepper could be read in-game somehow, you'd end up with a cheap, powerful, compact immersion device.
I wonder if the virtuix team considered this? They probably had a good reason for choosing a treadmill solution (natural gait being the first that springs to mind).
