Is this a good machine spec for dev?
Hi folks,
I'm looking for a relatively cheap machine to develop on for the Oculus Rift. The boss wants it justifying so can't go crazy but i've been quoted this. Does it seem ok? £350 for the following:
Intel Xeon W5590 3.33GHz Quad Core CPU (better than the i5 2400)
8GB DDR3 10600R ECC RAM (Registered DIMMs)
250GB HDD
nVidia GTX750 2GB GDDR5 Graphics Card
Look forward to yr thoughts.

I think you mean SSD, right? Well, I'm guessing it's fine, but expect games to be more demanding in near future for VR. - cyberealityGrand ChampionYeah, you can develop on a machine like that. However, it may or may not be able to play every Rift game at full speed. In fact, some could be too slow.
That said, if your project is targeting lower-spec machines, then it should be OK. - OneirosHonored GuestLooks good but I would suggest getting a cheaper CPU and spending more on the GPU.
For reference I have a gtx750ti, 4gb 10600 RAM and an athlon II x2 255 (dual core). Runs most demos fine, but I haven't tried anything serious like elite: dangerous and I don't plan on it. - obzenExpert Protege

If that's all the budget I'd got, then I'd walk away. What the point if you can't even get a decent machine to develop and test on?
GTX970, quad-core i5 type CPU, 250GB SSD (even a cheap 128GB if your projects are relatively small, but get a SSD, makes dev-life so much easier), 8GB high speed RAM (not that crap, why do you need ECC for?). That'd be my spec, or it's just a waste of time and resource. - AnonymousSo... I don't know what country you're from, but 350£ is only just enough for a proper graphics card and proper SSD in Denmark.
But given that you can actually buy that hardware for the specified price, I'd say what an earlier reply said: Spend less on the CPU and more on the graphics card.
Other than that, go for it.
