Leap Motion - Need Input
For our current project, we are really interested in getting hands into VR. I really liked the Leap Motion product and was planning to purchase it until the announcement that OVR had purchased Nimble VR (http://nimblevr.com/).
Now our project is a little stuck. We are happy that OVR has made the acquisition and all the positive that might bring; but what do we do today?
The Leap Motion is available now, so we are considering building our application using that, and then transitioning to OVR's NimbleVR implementation when/if that becomes available. If both happen to support similar functionality, we could potentially end up supporting both as a result. Does anyone foresee any difficulties with this approach? I would prefer that we get started sooner than later, but also hate throwing away work.
Thanks!

- lmaceleightonHonored GuestI was wondering the same. I am going with the Leap at the moment, and they sent me one for development, and they might for you too if you ask them, they were really awesome about it! Anyway i can make the assumption that you "should" be able to make you system hand both at-least. Can't say weather they will be compatible, but I am going with I will add functionality for what ever they go with. I believe they will let us know with enough time for development of input if this is going to make CV1 or not, I doubt they will leave us in the dark. What engine are you using? Unity is easy as far as Leap goes, unreal does have an unofficial plugin that works well.

That was really cool of them. I am planning on using their 3djam promo code as it brings the cost down to $72. Not free, but not too expensive either."lmaceleighton" wrote:

I am using Unreal Engine. I wish there were an official plugin, but getnamo is really cool. He posts both here and in the Leap Motion forums. If you are the same lmaceleighton as in the Unreal Engine forums, would I be correct in assuming you are also working with Unreal Engine? - andrewtekMemberThanks for the input lmaceleighton. I decided to get it. Very much looking forward to working with it. Are you aware of any community resources specifically for Unreal Engine + Leap Motion?
- lmaceleightonHonored GuestI have not found anything yet, but it would be awesome to have some sort of example level.
As a side note: I just hired a programmer to help write a plugin for Unreal 4(and yes that is me in the Unreal Forums;O), that even though it is for my person VR Input solution, it is based on Arduino Hardware, so the "Plugin" should also work for any Arduino based Hardware, or anything that writes and reads values from a Serial Port. This is related to the Leap because I am planning on the Leap taking care of hand tracking even while I am holding my VRgun, and through blueprint interacting with my plugin and the Leap Plugin, so the two complement each other, essentially give Leap access to an IMU that either hand can hold and use, helping keep track of the hand orientation... anyway I am hoping this will spur others to create their own VR Input solutions. - thorohtechHonored GuestAndrew,
Nimble or Leap... I think you should go ahead and get hold of the Leap for now since you will want to think about how the interaction method works in general. You will find out pros and cons which I am sure you will bring with you when the Nimble becomes available. Going forward is hard if one always wait for the newest next thing...
