Lens Cup SDK Changes

When running TF2, Valve wants to know (via the "oculus_lens_type" convar) that you've switched between the A, B, or C cups. From what I've read in the SDK, there's nearly no mention of them being any different, so what does Valve do to change their configuration that needs to know this? Do they shift the FoV downwards for the taller lenses? Does it affect some change in their chromatic aberration correction shader? Does anybody have any ideas?

  • One person was mentioning that their A cup gave them the best FOV over the c, so its possible that TF2 uses it for HUD positioning to determine the edge of the viewing area.
  • The longer cups have a wider FoV. The shortest C cup (my best focus) sees only about HALF of what the longest A cup sees (with my eyelashes brushing the lenses in both cases). Also, having your eyes farther from the lenses (such as when wearing eyeglasses) also reduces your FoV (a lot). That is my experience from trying all combinations using my Rift (including removing the foam so I could get my eyes closer to the short C cup lenses).

I have since reattached my foam and switched to the original A cup lenses that came preinstalled, sacrificing best focus (for me) in exchange for a wider FoV.

Specifying the FoV to a program allows it to not waste time rendering to pixels that you cannot see at your lens settings, and that saved rendering time can be applied to better texture detail for what you can see.

How did you measure this? I just ran through all the lenses with and without glasses and definitely A is wider then C but not 2x from what I'm seeing. I'm also not seeing a radical change in resolution, which I would expect if the A's were really looking at twice the area of the display compared to C.

OculusRoomTiny demo, look at floor, count how many tiles wide I can see from left to right (one eye closed). Change lenses and repeat...

By twice I mean twice as many pixels (esimated viewing area), not viewing diameter. So diameter difference perhaps about 40-percent extra diameter. It is subjective because the floor tiles at the edges of the FoV are narrowed a little by perspective projection.

And to get my eye close to the C lens I had to remove my foam from the Rift DK face mask (which had mostly detached anyway).
