Linux ON "HOLD?"

We haven't announced this but we are actually creating a 3d windows manager for linux. We are writing all our own network protocols and we bought the DK2 and that was going to be our main output. So basically by you focusing on the "Main platform" that would be that quasi legal malware called windows 10 (why? Is it because they gave you a bunch of xbox one controllers?) We will be going with something way more friendly to the superior operating systems... I am forced to consider the year of development and money we put into this using ONLY your product as a total loss... Thanks....

Look.. like attracts like... Windows has always been poorly developed, poorly protected and poorly executed. If you want to partner up with a mediocre Operating System from a company that has decided to give itself the right to download and store their users data (ie. emails, camera footage, contacts, documents etc. etc.) I suppose you are mediocre as well and a communist company as well... Because lets face it, your partner just decided to give itself more power than the USSR had over its people... AnD YOU SUPPORT THEM! WHAT A WASTE!

  • It has been clear by the release of the 0.4.0 SDK about a year back that the Oculus Rift SDK wouldn't even have the complete source available anymore and their EULA... well, you may have read it...

Not a total loss, if you haven't too tightly integrated with the oculus rift sdk. If you can implement support for another VR SDK like OpenVR or even better the OSVR SDK, you can continue to use the oculus rift dk2.
SteamVR comes bundled with an oculus rift plugin, it should "just work" (but without their "compositor", because Valve is still a "windows-first" company)
The OSVR SDK oculus support is a separate plugin: https://github.com/OSVR/OSVR-Oculus-Rift

In our university we had student courses to develop games for the Oculous rift. People were excited, to participate, and develop for this really new and shiny toy. But since linux is dropped this thing is on hold. People have to develop with dive, which I think is a total inferior product. You should know, that almost all computers here in this University are Linux computers.
  • Oculus have no idea how much their dropping of Linux and OSX has damaged the good faith they once enjoyed, and the extent to which it will force real innovators to other VR platforms.

When they dropped Linux support I asked for a refund on my DK2 and was firmly refused. Furthermore, they told me that nobody is being refunded. So even if you ordered your DK2 when Linux and OSX were officially supported but received it after they were dropped, tough luck.

Also with SDK 0.7, just as I predicted, the Windows Only SDK continues to move the API further and further from 0.5. Developing for 0.5 (and therefore OSX or Linux) is now a waste of time.

Oculus have behaved disgracefully. I guess the writing was on the wall with the Facebook acquisition, but this is now a company bought and paid for by the big boys.
  • The Oculus SDK is pretty worthless anyways. I suggest not using it in the first place.
When I first received my DK1 (and later DK2) I knew that I had to write most stuff my self anyways.
Open alternatives that do NOT implement the main loop is the way to go.

Care to point to anything specific? My understanding is that there is no open solution which can talk to the DK2 hardware completely satisfactorily. I'd love to be wrong though!

Same here. I'm a PhD student and originally I had the plan to offer some bachelor/master theses about big data visualization stuff. My whole data mining stuff is Linux based, so this is not gonna happen without Linux support. Instead of spreading some extra VR enthusiasm, my students now get to hear a story about a company that has managed to turn VR enthusiasm into VR frustration.

I'm in a similar situation. I also work in higher education and am in the process of explaining to funders why this device I've been championing for two years is now useless to us.
