MIT creates robotic material perfect for haptics
Its a material that can be switched from hard to soft states.

- mptpExplorerHoly crap yes. I'm not sure what kind of temperatures they're talking about, and how readily the materials can be switched between rigid and squishy. But you could totally build glove with solid pieces of plastic aligned with each finger-bone, and that fancy material at the joints, as well as a few pieces in the palm. Then you could force the glove to become rigid in such a way as to match the shape of a held object.
If the technology manages to get off the ground and becomes cheap/widespread, I can see it being included in devices of a ControlVR-like scale, so that you can start limiting the movement of the entire body, to simulate real environments like walls, trees, etc. that can be touched by simply reaching your hand out into physical space.
