Multi Monitor Concept
Accidentally posted this concept in the wrong forum so I'm going to post it here.
Here is some concept ideas I had for used for the Oculus, or at least one is my idea the other is taken from a game. Sorry if I'm in the wrong place for this but this seems like the crowd to talk to.
Would it be possible to design a multi-monitor setup. While an individual may only have 1 physical monitor, with the Oculus on would it be possible to mimic having multiple monitors, example, I look left I see one monitor I look right I see another and I look in the center I see my center monitor. I have a few computer programmer friends who like to have 2 or more monitors and I thought this might be an interest thing to look into.
Now for my second idea, would it be possible to create a kind of mock operating system. My example would be in the game Heavy Rain, when the FBI agents puts on his sunglasses and he can flip through files. Here's a YouTube video of what I'm talking about. Imagine being able to put the Oculus on to do your homework. Writing your next book underwater if you look around. Just a kind of mood thing. Or it could just be a relaxation thing, like slip the rift on and suddenly your in a rain forest or riding a boat down the Nile River.
I'm guessing my last idea has been brought up before but I really wanna see something like a virtual zoo or maybe a "Jurassic Park"

- GuspazHonored GuestThe concept might work generally, but the Rift will need to be much higher resolution before something like that is practical. Even the 1080p consumer version wouldn't cut it to act as a virtual KVM (consider that each eye sees half that, but then your vision is focused in a small part of the center).

I think the above concerns are valid, but it still might be a feasible alternative with a smart way of zooming in to specific areas and applications to get a high detail picture of them, and then zooming out to be able to benefit from the overview of data coming from your multiple virtual screens.
That being said, you wouldn't be able to tell much from a farther out perspective (like if it was mimicking a desk setup in real life) unless you had a more streamlined and larger UI that would have to be custom. - OculusGeekHonored GuestI'm similarly curious about the possibilities of this concept.
My specific context is around a virtual cockpit for real-life FPV RC flying. Video feeds into one "virtual monitor" that moves with my head tracking while triggering a camera pan/tilt on my FPV plane. My virtual dashboard stays "stationary" and shows my flight controls reflecting my telemetry feed. - amartinHonored Guest

I suspect that a 1080p version may actually be enough for this concept to work. You do not actually need to be able to see the full screen area all the time. For this to work it needs to be clear enough to allow easy reading. Since you can look around as long as the primary view area is large enough to cover the main area you are focusing on you may be able to get away with less. For my general use I end up with two or more windows side by side on my monitors so I'm not sure that half resolution will really be that big a problem.
The really huge thing about this for me is a rift compatible desktop would make my development workflow much much smoother. Having to constant switch output and take the rift on and off to make small code modicications within my app really sucks. However when I'm in the tweaking stage for a layout that is exactly what I am doing at the moment.
