No HDMI or DVI input

Ok I'm no expert when it comes to HDMI or DVI, but I do know I don't have either of these inputs on my laptop, I'm using an Alienware M15x which has 3usb ports, VGA and a E SATA port, now I haven't purchased a oculus yet due to not knowing if it will even work on my laptop, so I'm asking for some advice, is it still possible to set up the oculus on my laptop even tho I don't have the HDMI or DVI output, and if it is can you please explain it in detail how I go about it, thank you in advance :D

You don't have HDMI or DVI inputs? HDMI and DVI are output ports on a media source such as a laptop, or input ports on display devices such as an HDTV or Oculus Rift Dev Kit.

Although you did not mention it in your list of ports, the Alienware M15x is specified as having a DisplayPort jack, and many people report success using inexpensite DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters. Here is the "Display Port to HDMI M15x" thread at the Alienware forums:
    http://www.alienwarearena.com/forums/topic/2527/hardware/display-port-to-hdmi-m15x/

Here is an inexpensive DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable at Amazon ($10USD):

Be sure to get a cable or adapter with the right size connector (DisplayPort or mini-DisplayPort)...
  • Apologies for the wrong use if terms, lol, like I mentioned I'm no expert but cheers for the heads up and help, ill be placing my order for an oculus tonight, :D
  • Ah just 1 more question, is it best to get an adaptor from displayport to HDMI or DVI?
Recommendations please and to why you recommend 1 over the other, thank you again in advance.

i'd go to hdmi. you can use it for connecting to your tv when you're not using your rift.
i'm sure you've heard this before but you might want to wait until the commercial model comes out. there won't be a lot of step by step tutorials to get it working as this is a developers kit. if the rumours are correct, even if you buy it now, you'll have a few months use out of it before an updated version comes out.
    just my 2c haha.

Too late, already put in the order, I plan on getting the consumer version also but for developing I said I'd get it as early as possible :)

My M15 has a DVI port.

Really, that's odd that mine does not, would it be too much to ask for a pic of the DVI output on your M15x, I'm curious to see where it is on yours and to what mine has instead
  • The M15x product manuals say that it comes with VGA and DisplayPort:

In some Alienware support forums, people claimed that theirs came with a DVI port, but when questioned, they said that their DVI port "plugs into the DisplayPort jack".
  • will do,
Its on the left side of the keyboard, toward the rear, near the display. I gave it to my gifl friends son, I will grab it and get a pic.
