Non-gaming Oculus model for professionals and hobos

Hi everyone!
I think a lot of you will like this idea/suggestion.

So basically I thought why don't they (Oculus VR, Inc.) make a simpler model of Oculus Rift for the non-gaming part of population like myself. I love technology and I would love to buy Oculus but much of it's features are pointless for me. I would like to use Oculus for simple stuff like watching movies, programing when working from home, doing some stuff on computer more privately, photo editing etc.. just the every day stuff.

It would be great to have a high resolution head mount display, I mean just imagine coding and hacking our in the park! Your body is getting all the healthy sun rays, while your eyes are completely immersed in computing. Possibilities are endless... but if you have a gadget that costs a fortune I don't think anyone would want to take it out in public for a spin. Furthermore I am not prepared to pay a lot of money for features that I do not need or device that is obviously meant to be used "only" for gaming, and then use it explicitly for non gaming purposes.

Also a little but important this is... someone like me would love to just connect Oculus to computer directly with something like mini display port. If I need to buy some special equipment for wireless monitor connection, I probably wouldn't want to buy or carry such equipment with my small notebook just to be able to use Oculus. Point: simplify!

So this is my open suggestion to Oculus VR, Inc.
Please consider this suggestion!

Thank you, and everyone please give me your opinions on this... anyone else insterested in such model?

Supposedly the Rift's resolution is driven significantly by the quality of screens that can be feasibly manufactured on a consumer level at this time, then the price spikes a lot and it becomes non feasible at any higher resolutions right now.

You can already use it to watch movies using VR Player and SpaceSys VROSE is intended to make windows work with the Rift... So basically you want the CV1 with no motion tracking. At that point you might want to just wait for Sony or someone else to come out with a simpler product, because I doubt that OVR has something like that on their roadmap for the near future.

The two most likely: skin cancer and being mugged.

If you want to sit in a park using a vr headset, just buy a Vuzix or similar. My 1200vr is battery powered, plugs into a mobile phone, doesn't have distortion, can run in mono mode for non supported software, has head tracking and doesn't look like a giant face mask.
(Of course the fov is way worse and it costs way more, but it is a small portable battery powered vr system)

Which features are useless to you? The Rift is about as barebones as a VR headset can get and still work correctly.
  • Hobos still have the view to the park and a moist right hand. A bottle of rum ---and they're really prepped, totally in the pocket. They're good to go.

I have checked out the 1200vr and it's very bad for reading text (resolution is just too low). Same situation with 1200dx model. So yeah... :(

From the responses and further google searching I conclude there are no head-mounted displays for work (optimal for at least text editing).

    Thanks everyone for the responses.
  • If you just want a display to do text editing, check out the SiliconMicroDisplay ST1080.

Good recommendation. I haven't seen that one, thanks! But with pricetag of $799, I think Oculus (with proper software/driver for displaying linux desktop) wins it for me. The Oculus will probably also get much more portable in next iterations :)
