Oculus Meets Skype Using 360 Cam
Hello everyone,
This will be my first post here in the forum. My wife and I discussed the topic of skyping her family overseas and the Oculus is an obvious choice to simply ride along with our family, friends in the future. Is there any development on this currently? What are your thoughts and how this applies to social media? I believe that this could be a huge innovation to social media experience and I have many other ideas as well.

- timothyallanExplorerThere's a few issues I see:
Skypes main draw is 2 way video, and eventually people on the other end might want to see the top half of your face instead of a black brick.
Another one is that Skype, at least for my family, is a family thing. I don't want to have 4 headsets + computers so all of my family can 3D Skype another family, again with multiple headsets on.
There's no doubt that online chat etc will play a big role however. It'll be interesting to see what happens. - nosys70Expert Protegeyou can perfectly implement such a solution today by feeding skype with a 360 video and decompressing the same way on the other hand. this will probably be a very low res solution with few interest.
but if you skip skype limitation and write (or use) a viewer written specifically for that purpose, there should be no problem.
currently you got 360 deg system survey shooting 360 but streaming only the windows you are currently looking.
this limit the bandwidth and allow several user to use the same stream while looking at different part of the picture.
This would not be possible with oculus positionning since the ping of most ethernet link is way to long.
out of that, when doing skype communication, you are mainly interested by the person at the other side, so i do not really see the adavantage of getting full 360 view.
