Oculus Rift Dev kit (HD mods)?
Are there any mods or anything that can up the display on the Oculus Rift? I remember visiting a website and a few guys were talking about (tutorial) on how to display the oculus rift in 1080p (But I lost the link)
I heard that you can take apart the rift and put in a 1080p 5 inch monitor inside of it and it would basically work the same way.
I'm just curious on this, (I do plan on getting both dev kits) and the consumer version (to show my support). I just ordered my dev kit 1.0 and I've been hearing that it gets really difficult to read (while wearing the rift) "which would bother me extremely"

- raidho36Explorer1080p over 720p isn't such a substational resolution increase - reading text would still be god awful hard. But it sure will allow you to read more or less comfortably the texts that are barely readable with standard panel.
It will require you to use some specific panel, not just any FHD panel that fits. I beleive that'll also require you to use custom firmware, to handle different from a standard one panel. - aguilar92Honored Guestid love to see some one pull that off! =p
- RoasterRising StarTake two Ipad mini retina displays, portrait mode so you have 1536 x 2048 per eye ... even if you have to use prisms like they do in binoculars to get the ipd correct, it would be heavy and totally redefine displays. Remove the batteries and case, whatever. $1000 for (world class wide field) eyepieces, $800 for the ipads, $300 for the electronics ... voila!

Not sure if trolling, or serious. - RoasterRising StarSerious, but just dreaming out loud. I'm picturing a setup where the screens are arranged like blinders on a horse, with dielectric mirrors in front of your face, and with a 3d printer it seems like it's doable right now.
For that kind of resolution, I'd be willing to hang a bungee cord from the ceiling to carry some of the weight. - atomworksHonored GuestSurely that would create an issue whereby with the angle to your head the screens would require greater correction distortion. The result being despite the higher resolution screen most of your ability for detail would be wasted on the peripheral vision. That would leave you with greater potential problems being able to identify pixels in your focus. Also I'm sure angled screens would require some serious lens work. I'm talking purely theoretically though as I have no practical experience to say for sure.
I like the idea of having a 3D headset bungeed on the ceiling though, it's not really practical for the average user but if it makes my setup look more mad scientist that's a win in my book ;) - progsperHonored GuestIs there not a HD version comming out later? Perhaps it is possible to find out what hardware that is planned to use?
In doing that it might be easier to pull off... - drlazer19Honored GuestI purchased the dk1 myself and expect to see it this friday the 20th. I have been watching oculus rift closely for the last 2 years and am no where close to surprised how far they've come, infact I expected nothing less. I hear the dk2 will be out soon which makes me wonder if buying the dk1 was worth it. I hope its not as pixelly as everyone says!
