Oculus ski goggle effect?

So i often hear people describe the rift as "looking through ski goggles" as you can see the big black rims round the edges, and this ruins the "immersive experience" for some people. Im sure this question has came up before, but will/does oculus plan to make the screens bigger so your eyes dont see the black edges, instead only the edge of your vision like real life? And if so, when do you think this will come into play and why hasnt it been done by now?

  • I can see barely of the black frame. You have to look hard in the corner to see Black. So its not like a Ski goggle. More like a Motorbike Helmet. Maybe those Guys have used the wrong lens pair or moved the lenses away from ther eyes. In that case you see more of the black Frame. So i think if you wear glasses under the Rift the Black Frame will be more visilble because the lenses are further away from you eyes. You can Adjust that with a little screw at the side of the Rift.
  • OH NOES! Now you said it, every time I use it Im gonna see the Ski Goggles! It was the same with Screen Door it never bothered me till people kept complaining about it. Anything else you can say that will ruin it for me? LETS GO!!!!!
  • I messed around a bit with putting reflective foil around the edges, which did kind of work, but wasn't quite right, as instead of objects moving off the edge of the main screen and onto this screen, you saw a sort of reflective "halo" around your peripheral, it was better than a black edge though...

I wonder if the best way might be some very cheap (flexible) screens positioned around the edges, that genuinely render things out to beyond your peripheral vision?

Turns out Tinybarbiepoops was just trolling, but for the benefit of anyone new who finds this thread via Google (and ignoring the false assumption in the question): Palmer has said the consumer version will have a wider FOV than the dev kits.
  • I have never used a rift before, so I have a question that kind of goes along with this. When using the headset, when you move your eyes around is it easy to see the edge of the screen? Are you supposed to be looking straight ahead the entire time? I'll find out for sure when my DK2 gets here, but I'm just curious.
  • Yes if you fail to keep your eyes straight, you will get a mild electrical shock right into your temples. You wont do it again.
