- Shannonb1ExplorerVery cool idea, basis is to have the leap attached to your arm and follow your hand, rotation tracked by a light ball.....very cool idea.....practical in some ways...I would say closer to 100$ though. I have never seen a leap go for 25$......i would worry about crashing them together..

If you look on completed listings on ebay there are loads sold for under $25 in the last month alone.
Having two complete hands tracked would obviously be good but having one hand visible and interacting with the environment (while your other controls movement) is a nice (cheap) compromise. - lmaceleightonHonored GuestYou should be able to create a similar setup with the leap mounted on the face still, and track both hands. The open CV will still be able to capture you hand at arm fully extender in this case. Hmm Ill have a look into this, as this would really help our game ability to use Leap. Also, this would give me a backdoor for tracking other tools that a stick with leap, as I can use Open CV for tracking almost any prop...interesting...Ill do some real tests and let you all know, it would be great if one or two others would do the same. I happen to have all of this specific hardware on my desktop right now.

Leap released a mount a couple of weeks ago (although sticky backed velcro does the same thing) but the range just isn't quite there. If you put your hands quite close to your face it works, but as soon as you move out the range of the sensors the tracking doesn't have the range.
It's a major shame since another another 30cm would provide an awesome solution to hand tracking in VR. Perhaps the leap motion 'v2' could fix this with more range... and probably save the company... - alexcolganProtege

VR tracking is still very much in beta, but even with the current-generation hardware, we're seeing improvements in accuracy with successive rapid releases. Optimally, the Leap can track hands a good two feet away from the sensor, but recognizing hands in different positions and distinguishing them from ambient objects and surfaces (unlike the desktop orientation, which typically sees your palms and faces open space) are real challenges -- ones that we're constantly working on. - feelthreeHonored GuestAlex, is there some way of increasing the IR LEDs output, dynamically would be even better? I also think (although it's a bit of a hack) that putting IR absorbing material on your body when you're using it top down would be a way of creating better contrast with you hands, or some other way of increasing reflections from your hands for better recognition....
Have you also tried mounting one on an arm attached to the rift pointing down? This would increase the range and give you a better angle to see your hands... it's an experiment I'll be trying sooner or later but it's always better if you've got the source code handy :p Will play hell with the total weight on your face though :(
I love the LM and want it to succeed! You need to allow multiple devices to be used together too... - feelthreeHonored Guestbtw guys, if you want to see what can be done and the possibilities for VR, this demo is great....
- lmaceleightonHonored GuestIs that with your set-up in the demo?
- lmaceleightonHonored Guestlol never mind I see where its from:O)
- feelthreeHonored Guestintegrated wires into the arm, added a white LED. I'll try to post a video with the light on and being tracked in OpenCV, while showing the leap output too... *maybe* I'll hook up an IMU and show that at the same time...
