Ordering Dev Kit

Hi, guys!
This has probably been answered somewhere else but I couldn't find it.
I'm developing a game and I want add Oculus support from day 1. Is there any to purchase the final consumer model earlier, so I can integrate it properly?
I know they've been shipping unit's to developers but I couldn't find any official way to sign up.

  • You can submit your game for review by Oculus here:

    https://developer.oculus.com/blog/rift- ... -hardware/

If your game is considered worthy and is on track to release around the launch of the Rift (beginning of April, basically) then they will send you a free consumer Rift and the 1.0 SDK. If you're unsuccessful with this, the 1.0 SDK will be releasing at launch, and you'll have to get in line for a pre-order, which last I checked were currently shipping in June, not sure if that's changed. If you're really desperate, apparently if you buy one of the Rift PC bundles you can get it with the first shipment going out at the end of March, or maybe a bit earlier. Not sure all the details on that one though.
  • One stupid thing about the preorder site is, it is just about games. We are not developing any game, but a professional software used by Disney, Pixar, Crytec, EA, lots of other professional CG-Studios and even Oculus Story Studios itself!

So making games for final Hardware may struggle, since we were not yet able to fulfill the "Games Registration Form" - maybe we will try to make it anyway by assuming our small product is a Game and not professional Software to create Games for the Oculus Rift...
  • We are rolling out our professional design software with Oculus support in March. We have been working with the DK2 (we have several), and have it functional and optimized, but are unable to upload the software package for validation because it is protected.

We need to ensure our software is compatible with the shipping hardware. Help!

(Our support ticket is still unanswered after 1 week)
  • I make a media player for the Rift (Whirligig) and have submitted my app as requested on the 22nd of December. It is still currently under review and I'm not sure if I should pre order a cv1 as well. I don't have a budget for this project so forking out $599 to pre order a cv1 to then get a message to say I eligible for an early access kit will be expensive.

Basically I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do now. Should I be pre ordering one as well. The longer I leave it the later I'm going to be able to get my CV1 to develop on, which will mean that I won't be able to have an app that is fully functional for the launch. The main reason for me is to get it fully compatible with the controls including the remote they are shipping and also ensure full compatibility with the cv1 itself and establish a minimal system requirements for my app.

Pre-orders don't charge you till your unit ships. Put your preorder in and if you get approved you can cancel it.
  • Well I've ordered it. Thanks for the information. It doesn't look like I'll get it until June though but fingers crossed on the development early access. I don't want to have to release an app without testing and configuring it on the final product.

For peoples information. I've ordered to the UK and it will cost £529. That's £499 for the CV1 and £30 for the shipping. A little annoying considering the exchange rate puts $599 as £415 not £499 but what can you do :S
  • Considering all the noise about the odd shipping fees, exchange rates, and tax calculations, I think people noticed that already.
