Panoramic previewing with realtime fisheye dewarping

Magic Lantern, as many of you will know, is third party firmware for many Canon DSLRs which unlocks raw video capture and many other capabilities. One of these capabilities, for 5DMkIIs and 5DMkIIIs at least, is live previewing in panoramic modes with fisheye lenses. The standard projections provided are Panini - which is a sort of visually natural looking version of cylindrical -- and rectilinear.

It is possible to match particular fisheye lenses with particular desired projections by compiling your own versions of ML

Live panoramic viewing during videoing provides strong visual cues to whether you have the camera horizontal or not -- much better than peering at a bubble or the the Canon level indicator. You can see an enlarged version via an external monitor from the HDMI.

I have been using this feature with a Nikkor 10.5mm with adapter on my 5DMkIII (and MkII) and this provides very natural looking Panini view (the 10.5mm on full frame -- if you have cut off the lens hood -- gives you about 190 by 150 degrees coverage). I wear bifocals with a plain glass except for the magnifying section to see the screen up close. Here is a video (in equirectangular perspective) I shot using this as a viewing aid -- as a stabilization test with a mechanical gimbal + After Effects camera tracking + Element3d + Mettle.

One of the interesting features of the cheap Xiaomi Yi action camera is optional realtime dewarping into a very wide angle rectilinear view -- which is what is recorded on the memory card -- or visible on a monitoring Android or iOS device.

So mounting one of those on your 360 or 180 rig would be one way of getting a dewarped view.

It is hard to emphasize how much easier it is to see what is going on in the frame and whether it is level with a defished view. In security camera land panoramic modes are a common feature. eg.
