Pixel fill factor vs high resolution for ck1?

A extreme resolution would obviously be the end goal but isn't possible for ck1. Do you think it is better if Samsung focused research more on a high pixel fill rate or a screen above 1440p. I don't know how far you can push the pixel rate on a oled screen. I personally would prefer lower resolution with a reduced screen door effect for ck1. What are your thoughts?
*actually meant pixel fill factor not pixel fill rate

  • Ouclus reps have stated that they've eliminated the screen door effect for the consumer version. That could mean that they're using a precision diffusion layer to blend adjacent LED's together, or it could mean that they have a display that has less physical space between pixel elements. We just don't know, yet. About the only thing that we're pretty sure about is that it will be 2560x1440 and it will probably be from Samsung.
  • Iam not an expert, but does a higher pixel fill rate also mean that we could get a higher fov without making the sde too much visible?
  • Thank you for the info, that has made my day!! Just makes the wait even worst! :p
  • A higher fill rate won't make the fov different. If Samsung is doing a custom screen, they could however make the screen longer with a special resolution. Say 2,800 by 1440. That would increase the fov a lot.

I don't think any of you are using the term fill rate correctly.
  • Pixel fill rate is typically the rate that a gpu can write into video memory. Samsung doesn't make pc gpus and their mobile socs use Mali or PowerVR gpus, so they probably aren't spending much time researching fill rate improvements.

It's also not entirely dependent on refresh rate or resolution, because it also takes into account overdraw of pixels (due to back to front render order (wrong order or transparency) or multi pass materials.
  • Sorry, you are right. I meant the pixel fill factor. My memory is a bit fuzzy from when I read their post about it near the start of oculus forming.
