Position tracking mod to DK1 support by sdk 0.3.x

Would it be possible to get/make some form of middle ware to be able to use a different camera a la PS3's Eye Move Motion camera and a bunch of ir LED's attached to the DK1's outer shell so it can be tracked in the (more or less ) same way as Crystal Cove will be doing ?
I've seen a few methods of doing this with somne middleware for new apps in unity and the like, but it'd be awesome if it was possible to do this with the old DK1 too.

  • You could build an attachment that hooks a point light system onto the rift.

    You can look here: http://www.free-track.net/english/

I was actually thinking of doing just that actually until I can get the new one, too bad they didn't give a discount to people who got DK1:O/

You could also use a Wiimote to track up to 4 different points:

and on his site you'll see all kinds of interesting things. If you get any of them to work be sure to let us know here on the forums. I know I would love to see any home built project for gaming/VR, as I myself have hardware motion controller in the works for the rift.
  • I've allready got the ps3 eye and a few ir leds and I've just started playing around with fast-track and some others.
I was just hoping it would be possible to somehow integrate it with the builtin tracking code in the latest SDK.
  • Well I have been looking at just that for my motion controller, that way you don't have to have two of them hanging about somewhere, although this 'would' increase the FOV for the IR capture 'if' the two cameras were compatible, but in the end would cost more. Which would people prefer do you think? But to answer your question I think it IS very possible, and I am working on it so i will let you know, but for me I only need to add input for 'one' addition tracer, and a large on at that down the barrel of a gun, so it will stand out from the rift trackers. So I guess my goal in the end is to add controller support in the SDK...hmmm I wonder how much work this is going to be....I really need to hire some help!
  • Sweet :D
I've seen a guy who had 4 ps3 eye cameras working with a ps3 move stick stuck to the oculus to track his position.
This looks like a good idea, but I was sort of hoping for something more in the lines of what Crystal Cove has implemented.
It'd be pretty cool if it would be possible to extend the FOV as yuou mentioned with one or more extra cameras around the room.
But, in any case, the IR diods on the CC, do they pulse at a specific frequency so to detect what direction you are looking with respect to positional tracking ? or is it simply a "always on" setup for them ?
  • I'm working on an updated system that will use small retroreflective markers and a commonly available sensor to do this.

Chances are it's going to be a couple months before I can show anything off though :/
  • You can try to DIY a positional tracking solution, but it won't work with the official Oculus SDK so you will be limited to experiment only inside your own projects.
