Possible DIY screen upgrade for DK2 coming?
Just pontificating here.... but since the DK2 screen is technically just a Samsung note 3 screen, wouldn't it stand to reason that once the note 4 is released, it could be possible to swap out the screens with a replacement note 4 panel?
This of course is operating under the assumption that the panel size remains the same. (That IS rumored to be the case.)
So barring the display connector changing location or the proprietary connector changing design.... it seems within the realm of possibility, does it not?
Since the panel is rumored to have a resolution of 2560 x 1440, that would be quite a nice bump.
The HDMI circuitry in the DK2 is said to be capable of 4k at 60p according to the manufacturer.

- WodlooHonored GuestNo I don't think there will be a screen update for the DK2 and definitely not the the CV1. The very idea is ridiculous its a dev kit the only reason they released a new one is so people could dev for the new features, not so people would use it to play games. Do you know how annoying it would be for OV to send out these upgrades? How many people would fuck up and break their DK2's, that could of gone to developers who would actually make a game instead of using it to play games. OV has a very limited warranty the moment you replace that screen you done fucked up and any chance of a refund is gone.
Sorry if I came across hostile it's just that the idea was absurd. - MickmanProtege@ Wodloo - I don't think this thread is stating an "update for DK2 " but a screen swap..
It would not be an official update by Oculus. You would do this yourself... If in fact they are the same size it would be relatively easy to do.. yes ?
I am wondering how different the CV1 will actually be to the Dk2 ? probably not a lot really..
I'm hoping for greater positional tracking. the camera really is limited to such a confined area.. a 40º max. angle & its so easy to loose the tracking. - WodlooHonored Guest

Yes but even then your voiding a minimal warranty for some thing which may or may not work.

I believe I heard somewhere the CV1 would support multiple cameras. Either way I'm sure the camera will be better adjusted and have a wider range.

Most likely community driven.
I do not imagine the screen replacement process to be difficult, and as such I expect it to be done when a suitable screen is found.
(Other than possibly getting dust on your screen new) - realdavegerHonored GuestGalaxy Note 4 5,7 Zoll AMOLED 2560 × 1440 Pixel display, maybe... same size, Note 3 Display is in the dk2

did you even read the ops post fully...
hes just toying with the idea of changing the screen ourselves not a replacement from oculus
have you never tinkered with anything?????? - vast1983Honored GuestBingo.
Im just waiting for that puppy to come out and for ifixit to do a teardown. If that connector is even remotely in the same place im going to try it.
@Wodloo I get what you're saying and agree with what you said in context (minus the swearing, alot, for no reason), but yeah I don't think you thoroughly read my original post. - n00854180tExplorer

There was a similar thread on Reddit which seemed to conclude the problem is with the controller board not being able to handle the higher resolution @ 75hz. - Hicks613Heroic ExplorerWell it would be great if you can scale it to 1080@75 or native Note 4/Edge resolution @ 60 and compare. :)
I look forward to seeing a video with somebody attempting this. - felvhageHonored GuestWell, Galaxy Note 4 has been released and it does in fact have the same display-size (5,7 inch with QHD resoulution). I'm not much of an engineer, but i sure would like to see someone to try it out and perhaps produce a DIY guide. I would support a Kickstarter to gather the some hundred bucks for the galaxy note 4 display.
