Promising Concept - To show or not to show ??? (Link inside)
EDIT : More Informations about our project here : viewtopic.php?f=29&t=6669
Hi guys !
So I am confronted to a very hard decision.
A dev friend and I have been working on a concept that we think could be a huge revolution in the VR and telepresence fields.
Since we are only students we only had few days to work on it during the last two months, but we already have a promising prototype and some contacts with a lab that might help us in bringing it a step further. We also have some people ready to invest a bit of money on the project, probably enough for a nice start.
Now the problem is that our concept is great because it's simple and pretty damn efficient. Anyone with some skills and money could steal it and do it. We like the idea of open sources projects but we would also like to open a business thanks to this new "technology".
We didn't want to talk about it at all before having a more advanced prototype and some work from the lab, but we are also really scared that someone out there might have the same idea and might show it to you before we do.
So what should we do ? Should we keep it for ourselves until it is advanced enough or should we decide to keep you informed at every step of the project even if it means showing it to people with more means than us ?

- cyberealityGrand ChampionThere's no harm in keeping a project private in order to monetize it later on. The community already has more ideas floating around than anyone could hope to complete any time soon. It's not like there is a dearth of VR concepts.
- drashHeroic ExplorerMy not-so-expert advice is to wait until you've got something that will blow people away upon first introduction -- that's what will get people talking and always refer to it as an example of how something should be done. I'm all for seeing how things develop over time, but that first impression is crucial!
And, there's always going to be overlap with other people having the same ideas, it's a matter of creating a flavor of the idea that people want to come back to more than the others.
Good luck! :) - FritoExplorerIf you are planning to eat off this idea, dont show it. not yet. theres a lot of folks with idle money waiting these kind of things. Me included
If you think you could use the early publicity/need investors, you can always wait till you got it R for that.
good luck! - MannyLectroExplorerThank you for all your advices !
I will keep the project for myself then. I hope I'll soon have something to show you all ;) ! - AnonymousAny screenshots yet?

I agree with the group. Developing a project secretly, especially if you think you have some thing big is key.
Looking forward to seeing what you're working one, please keep us posted.
J. - progsperHonored GuestHey!
Keep it to your self. Once you develop it and see something more concrete you should show it... But remember that most people are nice, but some will take your idea... So make it, publish it and then you can share...
If you abandon the idea, put it out here so somone can look at it... And perhaps develop it... - moujaExplorer... and if you scare that someone might show the same idea before you do, why not setting up now a blogspot with a private access, and giving public permissions once you're ready. The dates of previous posts will tell about the anteriority of your idea.
- flawExplorerwell, you develop your project on your own and you seek the advice and support of the community and the resources available, so it's a little bit of both.
if you develop purely on your own, you might miss out some key concepts, you might be out of touch with your audience and you may be unable to tell if your idea is actually rubbish. honestly, most of the time you will need a third set of eyes to let you know if you're actually onto something or you just think you are.
at the some time, you don't want to blow your project out of the water.
the best thing to do at the moment it seems, is to get a prototype and get a kickstarter going. - MannyLectroExplorerThanks everyone for your advices.
My partner and I are unable to work on our project right now, but we'll get back to it in january.
Hopefully we'll have some stuff to show by the end of february or march.
We'll keep you posted ;) !
