To be clear the performance issue was not the distortion process itself but the requirement of rendering about ~3 times many pixel that would be necessary for a 2D 1080p screen.
What are the specific advantages of using Vulkan for VR?
Is there a high level wrapper library ala SFML for it out there?
I see that the new version of GLFW supports it, it's not as batteries included as I would hope but unless there are any other alternatives for me (I'm into procedurally generated content) I'll try it out.
