Rift Dance Revolution - A project in the making

Since I ordered my DK2 in May I've been learning Unity engine development in my spare time. I'm a full time web programmer so I've had a head start with the scripting. I'm pretty much new to everything else involving 3D game development. My goal is to create DDR experience for the rift where you feel like you are actually hitting the arrows with your feet when you're playing on a mat, and flying through various scenes that fit the mood of the music weather it's space, a creepy swamp, tropical reef, etc.

Right now it's very crude because I'm terrible at game development. But I'm hoping to spark interest in the development community.

When I complete this project I should be able to convert any existing stepmania track to VR format. I've got the matching of arrows to the music down without having to recreate the original patterns. The existing game data works!

It would be nice to have some 3D models for the arrows instead of flat planes with animated texture. Wouldn't know where to begin to find something like this.

So are there any DDR fans out there?

  • I've actually been planning to add VR support to StepMania, since it'd be pretty straightforward and the engine already renders everything in 3D.

If you want some 3D arrows you can use the ones in StepMania - the midi-* skins have 3D variants (or you can go hunt down the ITG ones). You'll need milkshape 3d to convert them.

edit: ah, right, I use a different nick here. my usual nick is shakesoda.

Very cool that would be awesome! :D

The biggest difference between this project and SM is it will feel like you are traveling through a world instead of looking at a static background image. I would like to have crazy effects and events happening to the rhythm of the music. And possibly bend plane the arrows are moving on so it feels more like a rollercoaster. These ideas excite me.

I'm not a DDR fan but a Bemani fan in general, more into Beatmania IIDX, Pop'n Music, Guitar Freaks. I like what you're doing. Keep it up!

You might need some accurate foot trackers to fully recreate the DDR experience. I don't know of any except for PrioVR which does full body tracking. But it uses IMUs, and there's no absolute positional reference point which causes a kind of drift, so it might not be suitable for a DDR game where you have to place your feet on specific spots.

Another issue I see is that for any dancing game, you'll need to have a fully wireless system. I remember seeing a lot of DDR players do full 360 rotations, which would cause a VR player to be entangled in wires. That might be dangerous for any kind of dancing/fitness game. I'm imagining someone's legs getting caught on the cables and the dude falling over smashing his head into his desk :o

Standing up and flailing around in a dance game without physical safety restraints, whilst wearing a HMD?

Serious, and I mean serious balance issues.

I don't mean game play balance issues either, more like I've just fallen over and whacked my head on the shelf issues, esp if your virtual world camera drifts out of alignment. Think Die Hard 2 when the terrorists recalibrate sea level to appear lower than it actually is
