Rift Display Mode - Direct HMD crashes

I'm having the exact same issues on all laptops as well. Any Oculus demo - including the one "built in" to the config tool - crashes. The error report is mostly gibberish to me, but I get this at the top:
Exception instruction address: 0x6cb1ab94 (see callstack below)
Exception description: ACCESS_VIOLATION writing address 0x00000000
Exception location: NVAPI_Thunk (444084)
I have disabled the onboard graphics through the BIOS, but the HMD still has an orange light on it. Only when I enter extended mode does the HMD light turn blue.
Not sure what to make of it. I guess a desktop computer with a standard NVidia / AMD gaming graphics card is practically required at this stage.
