Rift for the masses
I saw today in the news a guy is trying to open the vr cafe in Boston before the consumer version is released, and it brought up a few questions. Mainly a good point was made by some feedback to the article
" You wear this thing strapped to your face, pressed against your skin. Sharing such intimate equipment with countless strangers is yucky, just one step above sharing toothbrushes."
It is a very valid point and for those of us considering opening one of these cafe's, which I have been for quite some time, are there any plans to make the rift clean for multiple users to use in a cafe type setting? Maybe this is a question best suited for the new Team Carbon Design to have the answer for?

- zdanielHonored GuestYep, valid point there.
The Rift may cost USD 300-400, but having a suitable computer, plus the Rift, plus software... that will be expensive.
Not everyone will be able or want to spend that much. So VR renting will eventually happen. Sounds like a fact. - TwitchmonkeyExplorerYou can just wipe it down between uses with one of those sanitary wipes, but some sort of disposable covering might not be a bad option either.
- saviorntProtegeThis is a bit off-topic, but in regards to the sanitation between uses... There is an issue with the new generation of being "overly-sanitized", which causes problems down the road, namely due to the immune system not becoming well-developed.
With some of my weekend activities (I'm an outdoors type of guy), a bit of dirt/sweat from someone's face is the least of my concerns. Or I would say that it is the least of my concerns.. but it doesn't even rate that high. - SharpfishHeroic ExplorerBattlezone and other machines you pressed your face up to in the arcades in the 80s, video game joysticks and buttons covered in all kinds of stuff from dirty handed kids (me included), even way back 'what the butler saw' face on machine stuff (which surely induced some kind of sweating, and possibly other bodily secretions on our Victorian pleasure seeking ancestors)
...yet not one of us cared, nor caught a disease because of it. - 3dvrmonsterExplorerSome people do not have the luxury of getting out among people as often as others, so sanitation is of more importance.
- ElectricMucusExplorerFor what it's worth the cushion could be made out of silicone rubber which can be removed and then sterilized. OVR could sell additional spares which could also be made in 3 different sizes.
It would be nice if it were also dishwasher safe.
But TBH it would be better to make them a through away product which can be used for a month and then replaced. - 3dvrmonsterExplorer

That's the kinda input I'm talking about! You can actually picture CV1 to have clip on clip off face cushions. It would diversify accessories you could sell too, and at the same time customize the consumers fit. I'm sold - SharpfishHeroic Explorer

If these people don't get out much then they are unlikely to be visiting a public VR hang out! :P
Yes sanitation is important, but if I was that concerned about it myself I would just not bother using public ones, same as anything (toilets etc). - SharpfishHeroic Explorer

It could also highlight the rift/HMDs as some kinda 'dirty' device that encroaches on your soul and sucks your brain out (kinda like medical stuff), that's not a good image for VR so early on imo.
I'm playing devil's advocate here of course, I hope they have come nice solution for those that require it. - 3dvrmonsterExplorer

"'dirty' device that encroaches on your soul and sucks your brain out"
^^
I don't know about this being the case. I do know that after running on an omni you are going to sweat your ass off, and just like the gym you will want to clean your equipment well. Now I don't know where you are from, but down here round New Orleans you gonna wanna clean that mask off. Cuz' it's going to get funky real quick. Everything needs to be easy to clean matter of fact. Cleanliness is next to godliness didn't you know? I appreciate the feedback!
