Rift-Mounted Leap Motion Controller Demo (WIP 4: 5/9/13)
UPDATE:
Works great to view on your rift and in free-view! Two new melee types and a preliminary menu system.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update: Sword-like Blunt Sticks!
Here I move around the cube a lot to show spatial awareness and I tap it on most of its sides. It's the most stable demo yet, it's finally physically responsive, and it's a great time waster!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just cooked up a little Rift-Mounted Leap Hand Tracking Demo. Firmly attach your Leap to the center of the faceplate of your rift. If your hand is upside-down, go into the Leap Tray Icon and click "Reverse Orientation".

- AleksBeerHonored GuestGot a photo of what yours looks like attached to your rift? Might help give a better idea of how to replicate what you're doing yourself.
- vrexperienceExplorerLooking forward to getting my Leap motion and I was thinking along the same lines of mounting the leap on the rift.
I think the Leap and Rift will be an amazing combination. - zaloExplorerAdded a video to the OP to show off head tracking and hand tracking together.
Also in the video you get a brief glimpse of the rift... and a leap stuck to the front! Nothing mind-blowing there :D - ethnochrisHonored GuestWe have a couple of Leaps and found that the lack of finger recognition meant it wasn't possible to map the fingers to a virtual hand as their IDs keep changing. How do you find the tracking of the fingers in general?
- FrooxiusHonored GuestI'm planning to integrate my Leap Motion with Oculus Rift as well (once it arrives), but I haven't thought of mounting it to the Rift itself. Doesn't the constant motion of the Leap cause any problems? What are the advantages of having it on the Rift itself compared to sitting on a table?
How exactly did you attach it to the Rift? - KingK76ProtegeThis is funny... I had a very similar idea of mounting the Leap sensor to your body for the exact effect your video shows working viewtopic.php?f=20&t=393 The only thing is when I started a thread and quarried if it could work (it was a few weeks ago) most every one said "no". I kind of left the idea behind after that but now I see that it Can work! I guess this just goes to show that on the internet people like to think of themselves as having the answers. But really they're just stifling creativity. This has taught me a lesson. And I am aware that this video is very early in testing but it does show that the Leap attached to your body (here it is the actual HMD) it can track your arms/hands. Very cool. :)
- zaloExplorerWell, we knew it could work six months ago when David (co-founder of Leap) taunted us with his tantalizing description of this system WITH THE POINT CLOUD VISUALIZATION.

Did I mention that this is the same point cloud visualization that he is never going to release? - KingK76Protege

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying I was the first one with this idea. It's more that the immediate consensus that the idea wouldn't work when it apparently does is what I was speaking to. I have never seen the article you linked to. When I started that thread it was immediately after being on the Leap website and checking out the device for the first time. Besides, just having an idea and being able to bring that idea to fruition are two different things. I think it's great that you were able to accomplish what I watched in that video (btw... where did the video go?). I hope you are able to put the finishing touches on your project so that we can all experience that synergy of those two technologies. - zaloExplorerOops, sorry if you took that the wrong way. I wasn't insinuating you thought you were the first. It's more my frustration with leap motion for knowing that the leap has the potential to do all these amazing things and then flatly refusing to make the core functionality available.
In the mean time, I'm going to try to get Razer's Hydra integration working better with the leap. As the leap SDK stands now, I doubt I can get it to recognize more than simple "hand is open" and "hand is grabbing" gestures based on the number of fingers the device can see. "KingK76" wrote:

Maybe you should reread your thread again before accusing us of stifling your creativity. Only one person (the very last post) said it wouldn't work because the leap must be stationary. Most of the posts supported the idea. Some had concerns over chaining of sensor dependencies, but never said it wasn't possible. In fact Sebbi, jordanp and I talked about attaching the leap to the rift and you thought it wouldn't work as well as having the leap attached to your chest instead.
