screen door effect mod

I did the anti screen door effect mod with two sheets Laminating Pouches .
It removes the screen door effect completely but it is very blurry.
It took me 10 minutes to finish this mod it is very easy.
I took a Laminating Pouches in A3 size format .No need to cut something.
It looks like you are watching through a 4k super blurry screen.

  • I'm not going to attempt it on mine, do you think it's worth the effort?
  • Just makes everything blurrier. So I dunno, my screendor doesn't bother me.
  • I just tried it with a single laminating sheet and it looked like crap. I found the sheet was much more visible and distracting than the screen door. I tried both matte side up and matte side down. Maybe it's better with two sheets, but I didn't want to take it apart again. I might try again some time with the 3M stuff, but the SDE never bothered me that much anyway.
Turning up the saturation a bit improved the colours a lot though.
  • I tried this and when I was opening the Oculus Rift, I jabbed the screen and ruined it. Stupid me. I don't recommend it as now I'm trying to find a replacement screen that'll work as a drop in and having a hard time.
  • Well the instructions specifically said to be very careful with it because it's a bare screen, not a single protection layer is installed. For the reference, regular screens equipped with 0.5 to 3 millimeters of protection layers.
  • Use the proper 3M privacy screen and it works far better. The screen door effect is greatly reduced but still retaining image clarity. Pump up the gamma and contrast after though as it slightly darkens the screen. With only one layer the image is not blurry. I haven't' tried two layers yet though.

I did this mod and it helps making the SDE less "hard" - it softens the SDE- the image is not blurry at all - really.
You have to be very careful when opening the screen - double check that the side with the cabel faces the table and then open it - but it's quite easy, using a Credit Card :). I also think that the SDE is more or less different for every user - for me as a totally nearsided person, it's quite visible without the mod - so I applied it and I am quite happy with it. I am using the 3M screen which was mentioned in the threads about the SDE Mod. Together with downsampling GPU and using the nvidia Color Settings you can totally increase the image quality. I played "Batmans Cave" and it was a whole new experience - the same for Titans.

By the way: You can really get it super cheap at ebay! Just paid 1.20 Euro for an original 3M Screen! You have to search for "vikuiti" - it's the brand from 3M. Many people selling this stuff on ebay. I wouldn't have paid 70 Dollars for it to cut it :).

I tried this with Fellowes thermal pouching, and while it almost completely eliminated the screen-door effect, it replaced it with a "satiny" look, like seeing the world through a veil. Rather sparkly, and an interesting effect overall, but definitely not what I was hoping for. Turns out Fellowes' brand is more reflective.

Going to see if I can't nab some 3M sheet and try again.
