Sense of Acceleration

I have been thinking about this for a while, and since I don't have a Rift yet I wanted to ask what peoples opinions are:

I love racing games and know from personal experience on the track that when going round corners, you end up tilting your head into the corner to compensate for the forces acting on your head.
Would tilting the screen at the same rate as the forces exerted onto the driver add a feel of Gravity/Acceleration?
The same idea would be to tilt the view up when accelerating forward, forcing the player to look down.
I understand that these should be very subtle and drift back to 0

Cymatic Bruce for example explained that in the Skyrim intro when the character is about to get his head chopped off, the camera is sideways and turning his head to match the view made it feel more natural.

Am very interested to see what Oculus have to show at E3 aswell

  • you could get someone to drive you around and hook up the rift to a laptop in the back of a car and then you would feel your moving lolz
  • In my opinion, camera movements to simulate Gforces, head bob, etc. are as effective in the Rift as they are on a flatscreen monitor. In other words, kinda but not really.

A unique side effect to the Rift is that movements like those can make some players nauseous, so use them wisely! :) I would recommend having an option for players to toggle on and off.

I believe rift racer currently has some responsive head movement that you can check out once you get your Rift. :)

I don't think it would work, and in practice might be more detrimental than anything. When you're accelerating in a car, your head is actually moving, and you sense the position and orientation of your head relative to your body. Making the camera viewpoint move would unlikely give you a sense of acceleration. Imagine that you make the camera pitch upwards during acceleration while your head remains level, in order to combat that you would have to pitch your head downwards. Seems quite awkward. Maybe moving the viewport backwards a little during accelerations might be ok.

That's the best idea I've heard actually. A little push back into your seat upon first hitting the gas might be a nice effect!
  • Hey Guys well i appreciate all the comments related to that topic.Thant's amazing!!

I've tested this out in a driving demo a while ago, it works really really well and doesn't give any feeling of motion sickness. Both pushing the camera back when accelerating, and pushing it forward when breaking works great!
