Sense of touch!!
I think sense of touch can really help with immersion. I have had this idea of either a glove or an aperture to attach to the flat side of your hand opposite the thumb (where you would karate chop) ...
Good idea but thats only one part of the challenge.
Touch is made of
_Compression of skin (your idea)
_Resistance to movment. (when you try to press an apple with your finger, they are blocked.)
